2009 Southern Conference Tournament Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

southern-conference-3509The 88th Southern Conference Tournament tips off Friday, March 6th at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This conference tournament usually takes place in relative obscurity but Davidson’s miracle run as a 10 seed in the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament has changed all that. Davidson is once again the team to beat in the Southern Conference. It will be joined by Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and The Citadel as teams with first round byes. Bet the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament at BetUS.

The Favorite: Davidson Wildcats

Davidson is 25-6 and on the season and finished 16-2 in Southern Conference play, but some experts speculate that the Wildcats will not get an NCAA tourney berth if they don’t get the automatic bid by winning this tournament. I disagree, as it would not be a smart move to leave last year’s NCAA Tournament media darling, Stephen Curry, out of the Big Dance. The Davidson Wildcats have long owned the Southern Conference. The Cats have a conference-best 56 tournament victories and have won the title 10 times. Davidson is a remarkable 53-3 in Southern Conference action dating back to the beginning of the 2006-07 season. This awesome run can be greatly attributed to Mr. Curry, who leads the nation with 28.4 points per game and 5.8 assists per game as well. Curry has made the transition to the point guard position flawlessly this season and has many experts speculating that he will be an NBA point guard. With there being some thought that Davidson could miss out on the Big Dance if they don’t win the tournament, expect the Wildcats to take care of business.

Another Team That Can Win: Charleston Cougars

The College of Charleston Cougars finished tied with The Citadel at 15-5 in the South Division, but they will have to play a first round game against 6th seed UNC Greensboro because they lost the tiebreaker to The Citadel. I know its tough to run the table when you don’t get a first round bye, but this Charleston team is talented enough offensively to get it done. The Cougars recorded 23 wins this season and they head into the tournament hot, having won seven of their last eight games. I expect the Cougars to ride their high scoring offense and their momentum to a good showing in this tourney. Andrew Goudelock is Charleston’s go-to guy, but the Cougars boast five of other capable scorers as well. The Cougars will have to avenge a loss to The Citadel to get to the title game but the revenge factor can never be underestimated.

2008 Southern Conference Tournament Recap:
Davidson cruised to a Southern Conference Tourney title with convincing wins over Wofford, UNC Greensboro, and Elon in the championship game. The Wildcats earned an automatic bid to the Big Dance and got their money worth as star guard Stepen Curry led them to the Elite Eight before getting edged out by eventual national champion Kansas. Davidson’s run included wins over Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Wisconsin. Playing the Jawyhawks to a 2-point game was Kansas’ slightest margin of victory in the tournament.
