Our coverage of the small guys continues with this 2009 Summit League Men’s Basketball Tournament predictions article. The Summit League Tourney tips Saturday, March 7th and continues through Tuesday, March 10th with the Championship Game being broadcast on ESPN 2. All the action will take place at Sioux Falls Arena in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Summit League is a 10 team league but only 8 teams get the opportunity to compete for entrance into the NCAA Tournament. The North Dakota State Bison earned the No. 1 seed and will try to take home the conference title in their neighbor state. In this article, I’ll take a look at the favorite and also another team I feel can cut down the nets. Bet Summit League Mens Basketball Tournament at BetUS.
The Favorite: North Dakota State Bison
What a season it has been for the Bison, who enter the tournament at 23-6 and finished 16-2 in Summit League play. North Dakota State brings in a 4 game winning streak and won 15 of its last 16 games. Its 75-72 win at No. 2 seed Oral Roberts closed out the season with an exclamation mark! The Bison played just one lined game this season and their backers took advantage as they beat Wisconsin Milwaukee and the 2-point spread with an 8-point win in a bracket buster contest. The Bison are known for really being able to score the basketball. They average 81.3 points per game which is good for 8th in the country. This team can flat out shoot it from the perimeter as well with a 41.5 percent three point field goal percentage, which is good for second best in the country. Ben Woodside and Brett Winkelman can really fill it up, averaging 23.0 and 18.8 points per game respectively.
Another Team That Can Win: Oakland Golden Grizzlies
The Bison proved to be too much for defending Summit League Tournament champion Oral Roberts this season as they swept the series. But Oakland was responsible for one of North Dakota State’s two conference losses and has the scorers to match up with the high scoring Bison. Oakland split with Oral Roberts but proved to be the better team as it lost at ORU in overtime and then defeated the Golden Eagles by 12 at home. Winning conference basketball tournaments has a lot to do with getting hot at the right time and the Grizzlies certainly have as they bring a 7 game winning streak into the tourney. The Grizzlies have already prove once that they can play North Dakota State’s uptempo style and they have the best chance at doing it again. Johnathon Jones, Keith Benson, and Erik Kangas are the players to watch with Kangas leading the way at 18.9 points per game.
2008 Summit League Tournament Recap:
