2009 Super Bowl Betting: Futures
While the focus of most is at the task at hand, picking this year’s Super Bowl winner, odds makers often release Super Bowl betting odds for the upcoming year at this time. Those that made the bold wager of taking the Arizona Cardinals at this time last season are on the brink of collecting a hefty paycheck. While we don’t yet know what these teams will do in the draft and in free agency, we can still have a pretty good grasp of what to expect next season. With the previous season fresh in our minds, this isn’t a bad time to take a look at some great value bets that could pay off in 2010.
You won’t see this handicapper laying down his money on the Lions, Chiefs, Raiders, or Rams, even though the odds are more than favorable. But you will see him taking a crack at some middle range teams.
First on the list is the Atlanta Falcons. What a turnaround this team made in a hurry. With running back Michael Turner, QB Matt Ryan, and wide receiver Roddy White, Atlanta has three offensive weapons to really build around. Atlanta finished the regular season 11-5 in 2008 and made the playoffs after finishing with only four wins in 2007. The Falcons clearly look like a team capable of emerging as the elite squad in the NFC South. We found out that Michael Turner can be a starting tailback in the NFL. He shut up any doubters by rushing for 1699 yards and 17 touchdowns, making the Chargers wish they had dealt L.T. instead. We also found out that Matt Ryan can play. There was speculation before the season that he might not even be the opening day starter, but the Falcons went with Ryan and never looked back. Ryan earned 2008 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors this past season and was also selected to the Pro Bowl as an alternate. While his nerves did show in the Wild Card game against the Cardinals, that experience will help him to be that much better next season. Bet the Atlanta Falcons to win the 2010 Super Bowl at +3000 at Sportsbook.com.
The San Diego Chargers were plagued with injuries all season long. This is a team which was among the favorites to advance to the 2009 Super Bowl following an AFC title game appearance in the 2007-08 season. While this current roster doesn’t have many more opportunities left, I like the Chargers to get healthy in the offseason and to make a serious push for a Super Bowl title. The biggest reason why they have a shot is QB Philip Rivers. With LaDainian Tomlinson battling nagging injuries, Rivers became the focal point of the offense and he delivered with a 4000-yard season. Rivers was instrumental in leading San Diego back from the dead into the playoffs and to a Wild Card win over the red hot Colts. This season, Rivers had the highest quarterback rating in the NFL (105.5), tallied a league-leading 34 touchdown passes, and averaged a league-best 8.4 yards per pass. L.T. will come back healthy next season to provide more offensive balance (he still gained over 1100 yards banged up). Another key will be the return of pass rushing specialist Shawne Merriman who missed the entire 2008 season with a knee injury. Merriman has a total of 39.5 sacks in three NFL seasons, making the Pro Bowl in all 3 seasons. His 39.5 sacks are the most for any player from 2005 to 2007. His presence in the lineup will instantly add credibility to the defense. Bet the San Diego Chargers at +1200 to win the 2010 Super Bowl.
The Green Bay Packers could be the team that rises the highest in 2009-10. QB Aaron Rodgers proved to be worth parting ways with Brett Favre, in my opinion, as he showed that he can play QB in the NFL at a very high level. Many pieces are still in place from the team which made it to the NFC title game in the 2007-08 season. Green Bay finished with a 6-10 record but lost seven games by four points or less. I see those games going in Green Bay’s favor next season. Rodgers threw for 4,038 yards, 28 touchdowns passes, and just 13 interceptions. Bet the Green Bay Packers at +2500 to win 2010 Super Bowl.
