2009 Super Bowl Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on January 21, 2009

super-bowl-predJimmy Boyd will have side and total wagers for the big game available for purchase by Super Bowl Sunday, but here are a few Super Bowl betting predictions that he is giving away for free. These predictions are some of the game’s best propositional betting opportunities.

Here is prop number one. Will the game go into overtime? Yes +700 or No -1700. While there is good value in selecting “yes”, and while this would seem like the year it could happen, with a regular season game ending in a tie and all, there has never been an overtime game in Super Bowl history. We’ve seen a one-point game between the Giants and the Bills and we’ve seen a couple three-point games decided by field goals in the closing seconds but never a tie. If you’ve got the money to pay the high price, this wager should be a gimme. Bet “No” at -1700 at Bookmaker.

This prop is a lot more affordable. Will Cardinals QB Kurt Warner throw at least one interception? Yes -240 or No +190. The Cardinals depend on moving the ball through the air and will likely depend even more so on moving the ball that way against a Steelers defense that has gobbled up the run all season long. This is a bet that Cards backers will reluctantly take, but Arizona can still win this game with Warner getting picked off as it has done so all season. Warner has thrown 16 interceptions this season and has thrown at least one in eight of his last 10 games. This is the best defense that the Cardinals have seen and I can see them getting Warner at least once. The number of times that the Cardinals throw the football and the amount of pressure that the Steelers will bring increases the chances. Troy Polamalu has been an assassin this season with seven interceptions by himself alone. The Steelers have 20 picks as a team. Smart money is on Warner throwing at least one. Bet “Yes” at -240 at Bookmaker.

Here’s prop bet number three and finally one where my side is showing better value. Will Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald score at least one touchdown? Yes -110 or No -120. Larry Fitzgerald is Arizona’s biggest offensive threat but the Steelers cannot afford to just key on him as Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston are also 1000-yard receivers that can hurt them. Pitt is a confident defense and will likely attempt to play the wideouts pretty straight up. Fitzgerald has 12 touchdowns catches on the season but has really come on strong down the stretch, playing at a very high level. He has scored at least one touchdown in each of Arizona’s last five games and also in seven of its last eight. The number of times that Arizona throws the football every game also helps his chances. If Arizona is to win this football game, Fitzgerald will be a big reason why. Stars have come up big in this game in recent years. It was Plaxico Burress for the Giants a season ago, Reggie Wayne for the Colts the season before, as he was already emerging as the new go-to guy for Manning, and Hines Ward in Super Bowl XL. Bet “Yes” at -110 at Bookmaker.
