2009 Sweet 16: Odds to Win the NCAA Championship
Arizona Wildcats – 50/1 Arizona received a lot of bad criticism by the selection crew when the earned their bid to the tournament with a 19-13 record. However, Arizona has played well in the post season and now will have to pull off the most improbable of upsets against overall number 1 seed Louisville in the sweet sixteen.
Connecticut Huskies – 6/1 The Huskies could be one of the best teams to consider winning the title all as long as they do not have to play Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh beat Connecticut twice this season and the Huskies only other loss in their last 20 games was the 6 overtime thriller to Syracuse.
Duke Blue Devils – 16/1 This is the point in the Tournament Duke has fallen to get past in the last few years. The Blue Devils have a really tough two game outlook against Villanova and Pittsburgh if they are to make any trips to the Final Four. However, they are receiving profitable odds.
Gonzaga Bulldogs – 18/1 Gonzaga will have to overcome the most favored team in the NCAA Tournament in the sweet sixteen to advance in terms of the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Bulldogs struggled to defeat Western Kentucky making any hopes of an upset a bit more unlikely.
Kansas Jayhawks – 30/1 The defending National Champions are receiving great odds for bettors. Kansas really closed out the latter part of the season strong winning the Big 12 regular season title. The Jayhawks will have an epic battle with powerhouse Michigan State next on the schedule.
Louisville Cardinals – 4/1 The Cardinals are the overall number 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big East regular season and tournament Championships. However, the Cardinals looked a bit shaky in their win against Siena making them questionable in terms of the long run.
Memphis Tigers – 13/2 Memphis could be just a great NCAA Tournament team. The Tigers do not play a hectic schedule like many of the other top rated seeds. However, their near 20 point blowout against Maryland proves they are a legitimate force to be reckoned with.
Michigan State Spartans – 20/1 The Spartans took down a tough USC Trojans team in the 2nd round of the tournament. Michigan State struggled through inconsistency throughout the season, but has remained solid thus far in the early going.
Missouri Tigers – 30/1 Missouri captured a very tough win over Marquette in their last outing and will have an even tougher match-up with Memphis in the sweet sixteen. The game will be a battle of the Tigers to see who will move on to the Elite Eight.
North Carolina Tarheels – 3/1 Ty Lawson appeared unstoppable in the Tarheels victory over LSU. North Carolina simply has too many weapons for any defense to target. The Tarheels have had one of the best scoring offenses all season and their talent has shine brightly so far.
Oklahoma Sooners – 15/1 Oklahoma had a dominating season right up until the last two weeks of the regular season before they lost their momentum losing 4 of their last 6. However, Blake Griffin continues to dominate making the Sooners a threat to any team.
Pittsburgh Panthers – 6/1 The Panthers have a very manageable game in the sweet sixteen as long as there are not any letdown performances. Pittsburgh proved they can beat anyone when they took down Connecticut twice as the number 1 team in America late in the season this year.
Purdue Boilermakers – 40/1 Purdue has been in some very close battles in the NCAA Tournament winning both games by a combined 7 points. Purdue had a fairly strong season all year, but still has a lot to prove before we can expect them to get past Connecticut in their next outing.
Syracuse Orange – 20/1 Syracuse had an up and down year within conference play in the brutal Big East. However, they have appeared to be a solid tournament team that will get to prove exactly how good they truly are when they get the Oklahoma Sooners this Friday.
Villanova Wildcats – 22/1 Villanova may be one of the teams to consider for long shot odds to win the Championship. The Wildcats could give the Blue Devils problems in the sweet sixteen and already beat Pittsburgh earlier this year in conference play.
Xavier Musketeers – 50/1 Xavier still has a lot to prove after taking on two less than impressive opponents. However, the Musketeers could gain all the respect they need if they could come up with an upset over Pittsburgh. Xavier has been a rather quietly strong team this season, but will have to make a lot of noise to upset the Panthers this Thursday.
