Written by Jimmy Boyd

sweet-16-west-32409The top three seeds in the West Region and No. 5 seed Purdue are through to the Sweet 16. Now Jimmy takes a closer look at each matchup to see how these teams stack up against one another. Bet the Sweet 16 at BetUS and receive up to 145 percent in sign up bonuses.

No. 5 Purdue Boilermakers vs. No. 1 Connecticut Huskies – What ever debate there was about Connecticut not deserving a No. 1 seed prior to the tournament is no longer relevant as the Huskies have easily been the most dominant team in the Big Dance thus far. UConn slaughtered Chattanooga 103-47 with coach Calhoun watching from the hospital and then welcomed him back with a 92-66 blowout of Texas A&M. Connecticut is listed as a 6.5-point favorite against Purdue. The Boilermakers got a serious scare from Missouri Valley Conference champ Northern Iowa in round one and then held off Pac-10 champion Washington in round two. If any team will be able to slow down the Huskies offense though, it should be the Boilermakers as they are one of the elite defensive teams in the country. Purdue allows just 59.4 points per game and holds its opponents to 38.9 percent shooting. The key offensively for Purdue will be the ability of Robbie Hummel to step out on the perimeter and knock down three pointers. He has been quiet through the first two games of the Dance, but the Boilermakers are going to need his offense if they are going to beat Connecticut. A.J. Price and Jeff Adrien have both put together solid performances through the first two rounds of the tourney, but Purdue can match up with both of these players well. That puts more of the offensive load on Hasheem Thabeet’s shoulders. He didn’t do much against Texas A&M, but he didn’t have to. Let’s see how the big fella responds in this one. Bet Connecticut -6.5/Purdue +6.5 at BetUS.

No. 3 Missouri Tigers vs. No. 2 Memphis Tigers – Expect a wild one when Missouri faces off against national runner up Memphis as both of these teams like to press full court. Which ever team handles the pressure best and converts its opportunities should come out on top. Odds makers think that team will be Memphis and have listed the Memphis Tigers as the 4.5-point favorite. Both of these teams have been tested. Memphis received its test in round one against a surprising Cal State Northridge team before blowing out Maryland in round two. Mizzou cruised past Cornell and then out lasted Marquette in a nail biter. Memphis is going to go as far as its defense and Tyreke Evans takes it. Evans had 19 points and 5 assists against Maryland as Memphis won its 27th straight game. Mizzou has come out of nowhere to take the Big 12 and now the college basketball world by storm with its uptempo style of basketball. The Tigers are deep and balanced, but DeMarre Carrol is the guy that can get them to the Elite Eight. He is critical on both sides of the ball as he plays the point of the press and is a versatile player in transition. Bet Memphis -4.5/Missouri +4.5 at BetUS.
