2009 Temple Owls NCAA Football Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on June 11, 2009

temple-61109The Owls figure to put one of the MAC’s top defenses on the field, but will that be enough to contend for a MAC East title with the offense losing quarterback Adam DiMichele? We break down the 2009 Temple Owls in this 2009 college football betting preview and make our prediction on where we see them finishing in the MAC. Offense – Quarterback Adam DiMichele has left some big shoes for the Owls to fill. Often times, the best offense for Temple was DiMichele scrambling to create plays with his arm and legs. The success of the Owls in the upcoming season appears to hinge on how well either Vaughn Charlton or Chester Stewart perform. Both quarterbacks have had some experience under center. Charlton played in 2007 when DiMichele was injured. He took a redshirt last season so Stewart played when DiMichele went down last year. Charlton is the better passer and Stewart is the better runner so it will be up to head coach Al Golden to decide who’s the better leader.

Kee-ayre Griffin was the Owls’ leading rusher as a true freshman last fall, but his 394 yards are hardly anything to write home about. By all indications though, sophomore Ahkeem Smith is the guy to watch in the backfield this season.

The offense needs to get wide receiver James Nixon as many touches as possible. He is a game-breaker with his ability to take it the distance every time he catches the pigskin in space. Leading returning receiver Jason Harper was productive in his first season after switching from the running back position, catching 33 balls for 571 yards.

The offensive line was young in 2008, playing four freshman at once at times. With the elusive DiMichele no longer around to bail out the offense when the blocking breaks down, this unit will have to grow up in a hurry this season.

Defense – The Temple defense should keep the team competitive in most games. It allowed just 23.1 points per game last season (47th in the nation), which was considerably better than most of the league. It all starts up front. First-teamer Terrance Knighton must be replaced but the Owls still have plenty of talent and depth to get the job done. Expect nose tackle Andre Neblett to star in 2009. The linebacker unit is strong as well with Amara Kamara and John Haley back on the outside and Alex Joseph and Jordan Martin adding their experience and talent in the middle.

The secondary is deep and that’s a bonus in a league where so many teams are weak across the back. Jamal Schulters is expected to start at one corner with Anthony Ferla backing him up, and Marlin Terrell will start at the other corner. Dominique Harris and Jaiquawn Jarrett are expect to retain their starting safety spots. Plus, the depth improves with Daryl Robinson coming back on board after spending a year at a California junior college.

Predictions: 5th MAC East – The defense should keep the Owls in every league game, but the offense will be its downfall once again as the loss of DiMichele is too much to overcome in one season. Bet on football with Bookmaker to receive a 20 percent cash sign up bonus!
