2009 Tennessee Titans NFL Predictions
The Titans were able to build off their 10-win wild card campaign in 2007 with 13 wins to lock up the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs in 2008, but it was still one-and-done in the postseason. Now the team enters the 2009 season without Albert Haynesworth, its best defensive player, who chased the money to Washington. Do the Titans still have what it takes, without Haynesworth, to repeat as AFC South champs and challenge for a Super Bowl title? Find out where I have Tennessee finishing in the AFC South in this 2009 NFL betting preview. NFL odds makers have listed the Tennessee Titans at +2000 to win Super Bowl XLIV.

Offense – Quarterback Vince Young appeared to be the savior of this franchise when he burst onto the scene in 2006 and helped the Titans double their win total from the previous season. He had his struggles in 2007, but was still good enough to lead the Titans into the postseason with 10 wins. In 2008, it wasn’t Young, but veteran Kerry Collins who led the Titans to an AFC South title and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Collins’ numbers were modest, but the team operated better under his leadership and he made few mistakes. As for now, it’s Collins’ team.
One of the NFL’s best running attacks makes Collins’ job a whole lot easier. Rookie Chris Johnson rushed for 1,228 yards and nine scores with his speed being the perfect compliment to LenDale White’s punishing style. White scored 15 touchdowns and I expect a very good season from him in 2009 in what is a contract year. Ahmard Hall is one of the league’s best fullbacks and the team added Michigan State workhorse Javon Ringer in the draft to add depth.
The wide receiver position has not been an emphasis for this franchise. The Titans have not received consistent production from the spot since Derrick Mason left five years ago. In fact, tight end Bo Scaife led the team with 58 receptions last season and running back Chris Johnson finished second with 43. But the Titans finally decided to do something about the position. It brought in Nate Washington from Pittsburgh and drafted Rutgers star Kenny Britt in the first round. Hopefully, these guys will help Tennessee pose a more vertical threat.
The Titans offensive line is a considerable strength. Collins was sacked only eight times all season and the team rushed for nearly 2,200 yards. The unit is led by 2008 Pro Bowlers Michael Roos and Kevin Mawae.
Defense – Any one in the Titans organization is lying if you hear them say that the loss of Haynesworth won’t be a factor. The defense should still be formidable, but Haynesworth gave the Titans that X-factor. Expect Jason Jones to take over Haynesworth’s spot with Tony Brown alongside him. Jevon Kearse and Kyle Vanden Bosch will start at the end positions. The team is also excited about rookie tackle Sen’Derrick Marks.
The linebackers are led by Keith Bulluck, who should be poised for a big season in the final year of a contract. He will be joined by David Thornton and Stephen Tulloch. This unit is solid and has been very durable, which is a good thing since there isn’t much in waiting. Across the back, the Titans are exceptional. Three of the four starters in the secondary made the Pro Bowl in 2008. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan and safety Michael Griffin played out of their minds last year, but safety Chris Hope remains the leader of the unit.
Prediction: 2nd AFC South – I have the Tennessee Titans picked second in the division in my AFC South predictions. The Titans will remain a strong contender in the AFC, but without a force like Albert Haynesworth in the middle, I expect the Colts to reclaim the top spot in the South. I still have Titans making the postseason via a wild card spot. The Titans are listed at +250 to win the AFC South Division.
