2009 Texas A&M Football Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd

texas a&M 72409Mike Sherman’s first season as head man in College Station resulted in a 4-8 campaign, which included a 2-6 Big 12 mark. Rebuilding can be a very tough thing to do among the giants of the Big 12 South, but that is the task that Sherman and his staff have ahead of them. Find out where I have the Aggies finishing in the South Division in this 2009 NCAA football betting preview. Texas A&M is listed at +15,000 to with the 2009 BCS championship at BetUS.

Offense – The offense is not the problem in College Station. The Aggies bring back nine starters from a unit which averaged 25.0 points per game and was tough to stop through the air. A&M ranked 27th nationally with its 252.4 yards per game average through the air. The quarterback position appears to be in good hands with junior Jerrod Johnson. Johnson threw for 2,435 yards and a school-record 21 touchdowns in just 10 games last season. Johnson’s main targets will be Jeff Fuller and Ryan Tannehill. The two sophomore sensations combined to haul in 105 passes for 1,474 yards and 14 scores in 2008. Cyrus Gray and Bradley Stephens will share most of the carries at the tailback spot. Gray is more of a between the tackles guy while Stephens has the shiftiness to bounce it outside for big gains. Gray is the team’s top returning rusher, gaining 363 yards on 75 carries. For the offense to improve on last year’s numbers, the line must be better. The Aggies ranked dead last in the league in rushing offense and also in sacks allowed. The skill players are in place to be successful but the line must make major strides.

Defense – The defensive side of the football is really holding the Aggies back. A&M allowed 37.4 points per game in 2008 (114th nationally) and 461.9 yards per game (114th nationally). The Aggies also ranked 114th against the run as opponents gouged them for 219.3 yards per game. While the defense figures to struggle again in 2009, there will be a few bright spots. One of them is defensive end Von Miller. Miller has the skills to play on Sundays and I look for him to threaten double-digit sacks this season. The A&M secondary features a strong safety duo in Jordan Pugh and Trent Hunter also. Hunter, just a sophomore, shows a lot of promise after picking off three passes in his freshman campaign. The linebacker unit is talented, but very young an inexperienced with with two sophomores and a freshman listed as projected starters.

Prediction: 6th Big 12 South – Because A&M’s defense is so poor, the Aggies are forced with the challenge of outscoring teams to win football games, and that’s tough to do in the deep Big 12 South. Texas A&M is listed at +3,300 to win the Big 12 South Division at BetUS.
