2009 Tulane Football Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on June 22, 2009

Tulane 62209The Tulane Green Wave ranked 112th in the country in scoring last season, averaging just 16.7 points per game, on their way to a forgettable 2-10 campaign. Read on to find out if improvement is on the way in 2009. Receive up to 145% in sign up bonuses when you bet with BetUS!

Offense – Joe Kemp and Kevin Moore battled it out for the starting quarterback job this spring and Kemp came out on top. The coaching staff likes Kemp’s athletic ability and they are anxious to see what he can do as a broken collarbone kept him from taking over for Moore in 2008. Good play at this position is critical if the Wave hope to improve on a 2-10 season.

The good news for Kemp is that he will have running back Andre’ Anderson joining him in the backfield and wide receiver Jeremy Allen to throw to. Anderson had racked up 864 yards and seven scores before a shoulder injury derailed his season in the seventh game. Those numbers were good enough to make him the fourth leading rusher in the country at the time he was injured. His loss really hurt the running game as the Wave would go on to average just 118.4 yards per game (93rd nationally). Wide receiver Jeremy Allen was healthy just five games last season and he scored a touchdown in all five of those games. He provides the Green Wave with a deep threat to keep opposing defenses honest when they look to stack against the run. The line has four players with starting experience so if the QB spot performs well, the offense if going to do a lot better than the 16.7 points they averaged last season.

Defense – The Tulane defense allowed 34.5 points per game last season (106th nationally) and they were run on at will, allowing 218.4 yards per game (113th nationally). The team should be at least somewhat improved on the line, though, with a deep group of experienced players returning. Defensive tackles Reggie Scott and Oscar Ponce de Leon and defensive ends Adam Kwentua and Logan Kelley will likely start up front. Kelley is the team leading returning sack guy, recording seven in 2008. The rest of the defense doesn’t have the same depth. At linebacker, if either Travis Burks or David Kirksey go down, the Wave is in trouble. There is plenty of inexperience in the defensive backfield as well and the coaching staff will be looking for a couple stars to emerge from a recruiting class with six defensive backs. Keep your eyes on the lookout for freshman Alex Lauricella. He will start the season at free safety and has star written all over him.

Prediction: 5th Conference USA West – The Green Wave lost 17 players to season ending injuries in 2008 so improving on their 2-10 record should be a given if the injury bug can stay away. It will be critical that the team gets off to a good start with five of its first six games at the Superdome, but that’s not going to be easy with Tulsa and BYU visiting right out of the gate. We could see some value in making our football picks on the Wave early before odds makers adjust to this improved team.
