2009 US Open Betting Odds
The US Open is almost here, as the best golfers in the world get ready to take aim at the always difficult Bethpage Black golf course in Farmingdale, New York. The tournament is scheduled to get underway this Thursday and conclude on Father’s Day this Sunday. Last year Tiger Woods put on one of the more memorable displays in golf history. Woods played the tournament practically on one leg, and still had enough in the tank to win a classic playoff with Rocco Mediate in the unusual playoff at the US Open that requires an extra 18 holes to be played to decide the winner. Bethpage Black won’t be an easy task to handle for many of the golfers this weekend, as this course requires an assortment of shots and precise accuracy to shoot well. The last time the US Open was played at this course was back in 2002 and it was Tiger Woods who came away with the win, but the course has made a number of changes, including adding over 200 yards to the course, so its anyones to win this weekend. I have broken down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I feel have a shot to play well and possibly win this weekend.
Favorites: Tiger Woods +125, Phil Mickelson +1000, Jim Furyk +1500, and Geoff Ogilvy +2000
Woods comes in as the heavy favorite this weekend, and there is a pretty good chance that this guy will be right there in the thick of things when the tournament is winding down on Sunday afternoon. With the win at the US Open last year, Woods now has 3 career wins at this historic second major of the season. While Furyk won this event in 2003 and Ogilvy captured this title in 2006, Mickelson is still looking for his first win at a US Open. With all that is going on with Phil and his life outside of golf, it would be a remarkable win for him if he was able to capture the title this year, but I think his head might be else where, and you can’t win at Bethpage unless you are focused from the time you tee it up on Thursday till the final putt is made on the 18th green on Sunday.
Middle of the Pack: Paul Casey +2500, Retief Goosen +3000, Steve Stricker +3000, Vijay Singh +4000, Sergio Garcia +4000, Sean O’Hair +4000, Rory McIlroy +4000, Padriag Harrington +4000, David Toms +4000, Henrik Stenson +4000, and Camilo Villegas +4000
There is a lot of golfers in this group that could come out and really play well this weekend, and then there is a few guys that could really disappoint as well. Goosen is the only golfer in this group that has won this event, and I think its pretty safe to say he will play well this weekend. Other guys I like to play well here at Bethpage are Casey, Stricker, and O’Hair. The guys I think that will really struggle out of this group are McIlroy, Toms, Stenson, and Villegas. I could be completely wrong here, as any one of these guys could have the tournament of their lives this weekend.
Long Shots: Ernie Els +5000, Ian Poulter +5000, Kenny Perry +5000, Luke Donald +5000, Mike Weir +6000, Anthony Kim +6000, Stewart Cink +6000, Tim Clark +6000, Zach Johnson +6000, Angel Cabrera +7500, and Rocco Mediate +10000
A lot of interesting options here for those of you looking for a solid sleeper to win this weekend. Els has won this event twice in his career, but the last win came all the way back in 1997. Cabrera won the Masters earlier this season, and was the 2007 winner of the US Open, so he could really have a great start to the season if he wins this weekend. Other golfers that I like to play well here this weekend are Perry, Donald, and Johnson, as I think all three of these guys have what it takes to handle the difficult venue at Bethpage Black.
