2009 Valero Texas Open Betting Odds
It was quite the finish last week at the Players Championship. While Tiger Woods struggled to get it going on Sunday, Henrik Stenson had it going and came away with his biggest win of his career. This week the PGA Tour heads to San Antonio, Texas for the 2009 Valero Texas Open. The golfers will be teeing it up at La Cantera Golf Club, and to win this tournament the golfers are going to have to shoot lights out, as the average winning score is 18 under since 1995. Last year it was Zach Johnson who came away with the win, and he will be looking to repeat that success this weekend. While being long off the tee is nice, its really not that important here at Cantera, as accuracy seems to play a much bigger role at this golf course. The tournament gets going as usual on Thursday and finishes up Sunday afternoon, and to help you get going on the tournament this weekend, I have broken down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I think have a shot to win.
Favorites: Justin Leonard +1200, Zach Johnson +1200, Anthony Kim +1500, and Tim Clark +1500
While Zach Johnson is the defending champion, it has been Leonard who has really played well at this course over the years, as he has won this event 3 times, including a win in 2007. Kim has really struggled this season, and even put up an 82 last week at the Players Championship, so I don’t really think this week will be the week he gets back on track. Johnson is an excellent pick to win and defend his title, as his game goes great with this course. Finally Clark is an interesting option to go with this weekend, as he is one of the more accurate drivers on tour and has been great getting the ball on the green and making putts. I think Clark and Johnson are your two best options here.
Middle of the Pack: Chad Campbell +2500, Charley Hoffman +2500, Charlie Wi +2500, John Mallinger +2500, Stephen Ames +2500, Scott Verplank +3000, Bob Estes +3000, and Brian Gay +3000
There are some interesting players in the middle of the pack, and I think it starts with Hoffman, as he is the most reliable golfer in this group and will be going for his 21st consecutive cut made this weekend. Mallinger comes in playing really well, and could be ready to win this weekend. Wi was runner up in this event a year ago, and is a threat to win this weekend. I also likes Ames and Estes to play this weekend, but as far as picking just one golfer here, it would have to be Hoffman.
Long Shots: Daniel Chopra +4000, Mark Wilson +4000, Brian Davis +5000, Tim Wilkinson +5000, Bart Bryant +6000
Though I didn’t list a bunch of long shots to win this weekend, I like all 5 of these golfers this weekend, and think at least one of them is going to be right there with a chance to win come Sunday. Chopra finished 14th last week at the Players Championship, and tied for 3rd in his last start at Cantera in 2007. Both Wilson and Wilkinson finished tied for 2nd with Wi last year at this event, and both have the game to repeat that success this weekend. Davis is playing lights out of late, as he hasn’t had a round over par in his last 12 rounds, including all 4 rounds last week where he finished 5th at the Players Championship. Finally Bryant is a solid pick this week, as he won this event back in 2004, and could be ready to get his name back near the top of the leaderboard.
