WAC 61909I’ve given you the quick rundown on the WAC below, ranking all 9 teams from top to bottom. 1st Place: Boise State Broncos – The Broncos ran the table in the WAC last season going 8-0. With a defense that ranked 3rd in the nation in points allowed (12.6 points per game) and an exciting young QB in Kellen Moore, who took home WAC Freshman of the Year honors, I expect the Broncos to be back on top in 2009.

nd Place: Nevada Wolf Pack – Led by 2008 WAC Offensive Player of the Year Colin Kaepernick, the Wolf Pack boasts the top offense in the league. They’ll be able to put up points in bunches again this season, but the question remains if a defense that allowed 32.3 points per game will be able to keep its end of the bargain.

rd Place: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs – Following a second place finish in the WAC and a bowl victory for the first time in over 20 years, the boys from Ruston, Louisiana bring plenty of momentum into this season. They are always a tough out at home, where they were 5-1 in 2008, and they should especially be tough to take in Ruston this season with the amount of offensive talent returning.

th Place: Fresno State Bulldogs – Head coach Pat Hill took his team to a bowl game for the 9th time in his 12 seasons at the helm, but I agree with the critics who feel the team underachieved. A tenth bowl appearance under Hill in a season where not as much is expected would go a long way toward hushing some of those critics, but he will have his work cut out for himself with an unproven quarterback and a defense which couldn’t stop the run to save its life a year ago.

th Place: Hawaii Warriors – Hawaii was 5-2 at home during the regular season and that home field advantage will keep the Warriors competitive, but a drop off seems inevitable with the defense losing nine starters.

th Place: San Jose State Spartans – A heavy dose of the injury bug was certainly partially to blame for ruining the Spartans run at a bowl game last season. Now they must atone for the loss of two cornerbacks taken in the NFL draft and an All-WAC running back if they hope to improve on their 6-6 mark in 2008.

th Place: Utah State Aggies – Following a 3-9 season, I expect the Aggies to be much more competitive as new head coach Gary Andersen implements a no-huddle spread offense and a blitzing defense to put the pressure on the opposition. The wins may not come this season, but I expect they’ll start piling up in the near future.

th Place: New Mexico State Aggies – With last season’s 1-7 conference mark, the Aggies are 4-28 in league games since joining the WAC in 2005. Another trying year is ahead as the team must adjust to new schemes on both offense and defense under new head coach DeWayne Walker.

th Place: Idaho Vandals – The Vandals have lost at least eight games in each of the past eight seasons and this trend will likely continue in 2009. Idaho just doesn’t have the same talent as the upper echelon teams in the league.
