2009 Zurich Classic Betting Odds

Written by Jason Lowry

RomeroThe PGA Tour is heading to Louisiana this week for the 2009 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The tournament starts up this Thursday and finishes up on Sunday afternoon. Last year it was Andres Romero who came out on top at TPC of Louisiana and he will look to defend his title this week. The field isn’t that strong with many of the big names still taking some time off after the Masters. Even last weeks winner of the Verizon Heritage Brian Gay is taking this weekend off. With the tournament getting ready to start in just a couple days I have broken down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I think have a shot to win this weekend.

Favorites: Kenny Perry +1200, Nick Watney +1500, and Steve Stricker +1500

It will be interesting to see what kind of effects the near miss at the Masters has on Perry in his first start since falling just short of a green jacket. All signs point that Perry will be just fine, as he has finshed in the top 10 in 6 of his 10 starts. Watney earned his first PGA Tour win here at TPC of Louisiana back in 2007, and he could be ready for another win here, as he has 8 top 25 finishes in 9 starts this year. Stricker is another guy that has come out strong in 2009 with 4 top 10 finishes in 9 starts, but Stricker is still looking for that first win of the season. With so many big names out of the field this week, all 3 of these golfers have a great shot at coming out on top.

Middle of the Pack: Rory Sabbatini +2500, Woody Austin +3000, Scott Verplank +3000, Mike Weir +3000, Justin Rose +3000, John Merrick +3000, Ian Poulter +3000, David Toms +3000, Lucas Glover +3000, and Andres Romero +3000

There are a bunch of players in the middle of the pack with a good shot at winning this weekend. Looking at some of the names here, I look for a strong showing from Sabbatini this weekend, who comes in off a 8th place finish last week at the Verizon Heritage. Another guy to look out for is Woody Austin, who has made 15 consecutive cuts dating back to last year, but has not been able to come through with a win this season. Austin has finished in the top 5 at TPC Louisiana in two of the last 3 years, so don’t be surprised if he sneaks up to to the top of the leaderboard again this weekend. Also, you have to give some credit to Romero who will be looking to defend his title this weekend, but I am not sold on him repeating this weekend.

Long Shots: Boo Weekley +4000, JB Holmes +4000, KJ Choi +4000, Ryuji Imada +4000, Tim Petrovic +5000, Bubba Watson +6000, and Matt Kuchar +6000

With the big names still taking a break, the guys at the bottom have an even better chance of sneaking into the top and coming away with a win. Petrovic proved just that winning this tournament back in 2005, and KJ Choi won this thing back in 2002. If you are looking for someone out of this group to play well this weekend, I would look at Weekley and Watson, I think both of these players are going to be right in the thick of things come Sunday afternoon.
