Utah at Boise State – 2010 Las Vegas Bowl Odds

Written by -

The 19th edition of the bowl game in Las Vegas now known as the Maaco Bowl features one team about to enter the Mountain West Conference facing another team which is about to depart the MWC. Boise State is ending their affiliation with the Western Athletic Conference by representing it in this game against Utah, which is bolting the MWC for the Pac-10 (soon to become Pac-12) Conference.

Interestingly, this game is the only one to be played before New Year’s Day, and one of just five overall, to involve two teams with double-digit victory totals. Our college bowl odds show Boise favored by 17 points and the game total set for 59.5.

This will be the seventh all-time meeting between the Broncos and Utes. They last faced each other in Salt Lake City in September 2006, with the Broncos winning 36-3 to claim a 4-2 series lead.

Boise State is playing in a bowl game for the 11th time as an FBS school, all of which have occurred since 1999. They are 6-4 in these games, and while many would consider a trip to Las Vegas to be a top destination, the Broncos had their sights set on a BCS game. Those dreams were shattered by Nevada, so the seniors will look to finish with a victory in this game.

Utah also had some pre-season aspirations, and things started well with an overtime victory over pre-season Big East favorite Pittsburgh. But the Utes lost to TCU and Notre Dame, so they too are hoping to end their season on a positive note.

Utah is 12-3 all-time in bowl games, and they’ve won nine straight bowl games stretching back to 1999.

The Broncos offense is considered one of the best in the entire nation, and they are led by Heisman Trophy finalist Kellen Moore. The Broncos scored 560 points this season, and Moore was a main reason why, throwing for 3,506 yards and 33 touchdowns against just five interceptions. Moore completed 71 percent of his passes, and finished with a 185 quarterback rating while guiding the Broncos over three seasons to a 37-2 record.

His top two receivers are two of the best in the country. Titus Young led the club with 65 receptions for 1,151 yards and nine touchdowns. Austin Pettis was equally difficult for teams to account for catching 59 passes for 804 yards and nine touchdowns himself.

The ground game can also do damage for the Broncos, led by Doug Martin and his 1,113 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jeremy Avery also scored 11 rushing touchdowns as well.

Utah also has offensive weapons at their disposal as well, averaging 35.6 points per game themselves.

Quarterback Jordan Wynn is no slouch, throwing for 2,334 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season. His top receiving threat is Jereme Brooks, who caught 50 passes for 628 yards and four touchdowns, while Devonte Christopher led the team with six TD receptions.

Two running backs for the Utes, Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata, combined for 1,356 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns, spearheading Utah’s 4.7 yard per carry ground attack.

It’s a perfect matchup for Las Vegas because the two offenses figure to light up the scoreboard brighter than the lights on the Vegas Strip.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Boise State 48, Utah 38
