NFC North Champion: Minnesota Vikings – Assuming Brett Favre is back, the Vikings will have all the pieces to make another Super Bowl run, and they should be very motivated to do so after letting the NFC championship game slip away. The Green Bay Packers will be in the mix, but their pass defense against elite quarterbacks doesn’t inspire much confidence. Last season, the Packers were torched by Favre twice, by Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers once and by Kurt Warner and the Cardinals in the playoffs. I expect Adrian Peterson to finally find a cure for his fumbleitis, and Jared Allen will once again lead one of the best defensive units in football. Bet the Vikings at +130 to win the NFC North.

NFC East Champion: Dallas Cowboys – The Cowboys finally got a huge monkey off their back, winning their first playoff game in 13 years. I expect them to build off of that as they make a push for the Super Bowl. Led by offensive stars Tony Romo, Marion Barber, Miles Austin and Jason Witten, Dallas should once again boast one of the best offenses in the NFC. I believe Felix Jones is poised for a breakout season as well, and Dez Bryant adds even more firepower. Dallas was terrific defensively in 2009, allowing only 15.6 points per game. Led by DeMarcus Ware, the “D” should remain top notch. Bet the Cowboys at +125 to win the NFC East.

NFC West Champion: San Francisco 49ers – With Kurt Warner making the decision to retire from the Arizona Cardinals, I expect the NFC West to crown a new champion in 2010. There is a chance Matt Leinart could surprise, but I believe the chances are greater that the 49ers will wear the crown in 2010. Winning the division would mean the 49ers would make their first playoff appearance since 2002. Frank Gore is a talented workhorse and Patrick Willis can do it all from the linebacker spot. Alex Smith doesn’t have to be great, just solid, and I believe the 49ers will win the West. Bet the 49ers at -110 to win the NFC West.

NFC South Champion: New Orleans Saints – Since realignment in 2002, no team in the NFC South has won the division two years in a row. The Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers will both be playoff contenders, but I believe the Saints are still the team to beat in the South. Led by quarterback Drew Brees, the Saints led the NFL in scoring last season, averaging 31.9 points per game. With no shortage of weapons at his disposal, Brees will lead one of the best offensive units in football once again. The defense isn’t without holes, but this is a big play unit that plays with a lot or swagger.  Bringing back Darren Sharper, who had nine picks last season, was a key move that should help the Saints repeat in the South. Bet the Saints at -150 to win the NFC South.

AFC North Champion: Baltimore Ravens – With Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger set to miss at least the first four games, it really increases Baltimore’s chances of winning the North, especially since the two teams are set to meet in Pittsburgh in Week 4. I’m not counting out the Bengals by any means, but it’s hard to imagine them sweeping their AFC North slate again, especially with an offense that only averaged 19.1 points per game last season. Baltimore has the potential to be one of the highest scoring teams in the AFC, and its defense remains a perennial force. The Ravens finished No. 3 in the NFL in scoring defense last season, allowing only 16.3 points per game. Bet the Ravens at -115 to win the AFC North.

AFC East Champion: New York Jets – The New York Jets really impressed in their first season under Rex Ryan. They boasted the NFL’s No. 1 ranked rushing attack and its top scoring defense. The defense will remain elite, getting an added boost from the return of Kris Jenkins and the acquisitions of Jason Taylor and Antonio Cromartie. The offense was inconsistent as quarterback Mark Sanchez went through rookie growing pains, but I expect Sanchez to show improvement this season. The Jets brought in Braylon Edwards last year, and now they have added Santonio Holmes to give the second-year signal caller even more ammo. Bet the Jets at +140 to win the AFC East.

AFC West Champion: San Diego Chargers – Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers made a living out of picking apart secondaries last season. He’ll be at it again in 2010, and that’s why I like the Chargers to win the West. The Chargers have won the division four years in a row, and I don’t see this streak coming to an end. Adding the fresh legs of Ryan Matthews to replace LaDainian Tomlinson will make the offense even more dangerous. The defense was solid in 2009, ranking as the 11th-best scoring defense in the league. It could be even better this season if Shawne Merriman can return to form. Bet the Chargers at -325 to win the AFC West.

AFC South Champion: Indianapolis Colts – A Super Bowl loss will keep Peyton Manning and the Colts hungry as they enter the 2010 season. Pro Bowlers Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are Manning’s primary targets, but with Anthony Gonzalez back to team with 2009 breakouts Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, the Colts have surrounded their franchise QB with the most weapons he’s ever had. With Bob Sanders expected to return healthy, the defense will have the potential to be even better than it was a season ago. Bet the Colts at -150 to win the AFC South.
