SEC East
1. Florida Gators – Despite losing Tim Tebow, among others, to the NFL, the Gators are still the most talented team in the SEC East. They came up one win short, losing to Alabama in the SEC title game, of getting an opportunity to play for another BCS title, and that loss should have them entering the 2010 season with a chip on their shoulder. Look for junior quarterback John Brantley to waste no time making his mark and for the defense to remain one of the best units in the league. College football odds makers have listed Florida at +600 to win the BCS title.
2. Georgia Bulldogs – I don’t see the Dawgs having quite enough to get coach Mark Richt his third SEC title, but they should definitely improve on a disappointing 8-5 campaign. The Dawgs finished last season strong, winning four of their last five games, and that should create some nice momentum for this team heading into this season. Cutting down on turnovers and penalties this season will make Georgia better right away. Georgia is listed at +4000 to win the BCS title.
3. South Carolina Gamecocks – Under Steve Spurrier, the Gamecocks have annually failed to live up to the hype, but that could change this season. Stephen Garcia figures to be one of the best passers in the league, and with seven returning starters on the defensive side of the football, South Carolina should also boast one of the conferences best defenses. South Carolina is listed at +10000 to win the BCS title.
4. Tennessee Volunteers – New head coach Derek Dooley has his work cut out for himself in year one as the Vols bring back just nine starters. Plus, the schedule makers did him no favors with Oregon, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina all on the slate. Tennessee is listed at +10000 to win the BCS title.
5. Kentucky Wildcats – The Wildcats have found a way to make four straight bowl appearances, but it hasn’t been because they have dominated the SEC. The Wildcats are 0-12 against Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee during this span, and they find all three of those teams on their schedule in 2010. Kentucky is listed as part of the field at +10000 to win the BCS title.
6. Vanderbilt Commodores – Vandy went 0-8 in SEC play in 2009 just one season removed from going 4-4 and making its first bowl game since 1982. Its offense was anemic last season, scoring only 16.3 points per game to finish dead last in the SEC. There is some talent on the defensive side of the ball, but this unit spends way too much time on the field. Vanderbilt is listed as part of the field at +10000 to win the BCS title.
SEC West
1. Alabama Crimson Tide – Led by an offense that returns Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Mark Ingram and star wide receiver Julio Jones, I expect the Tide to be right in the mix for another SEC and BCS title. Coach Nick Saban keeps bringing in top notch talent to add depth behind established stars, and that’s why he is 33-8 in just three seasons at Alabama. Alabama is listed at +600 to win the BCS title.
2. Arkansas Razorbacks – Led by quarterback Ryan Mallett, the Razorbacks boasted the best offense in the SEC last season. With nine starters back from that unit, nothing should change in 2010. The Razorbacks will have a chance to spoil Alabama’s SEC title hopes early in the season when they host the Tide on September 25, but a defense which was among the worst in the conference in 2009 will have to make major strides for the Hogs to pull off the upset. Arkansas is listed at +3500 to win the BCS title game.
3. Auburn Tigers – Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn showed just how explosive his offenses can be in his first year on the job. Add talented juco transfer quarterback Cameron Newton to the mix, and the offense could be even more explosive in 2010. In order to contend for the SEC West, a defense which allowed the most points per game in SEC play last season must make a major turnaround. Auburn is listed at +8000 to win the BCS title.
4. LSU Tigers – In order to return to the top spot in the SEC, the Tigers will have to find a way to get past Florida, Alabama and Ole Miss. LSU is a combined 0-6 against the programs the last two seasons. LSU should have a good opportunity to beat Ole Miss at home this season, but taking down Florida and Alabama appears to be too much to ask. LSU is listed at +3500 to win the BCS title.
5. Mississippi Rebels – Ole Miss did not meet expectations in 2009, and with Dexter McCluster and Jevan Snead now departed, it’s hard to think they can challenge this year in such a talented league. Houston Nutt has brought in some impressive recruits, but it is going to take him at least a year to mold them. Mississippi is listed at +10000 to win the BCS title.
6. Mississippi State Bulldogs – The Bulldogs have only had one winning season in the last nine years. I like the spread option offense that Dan Mullen brought to Starkville, but this team still appears to be a season of two away from really making some noise. Mississippi State is listed as part of the field at +10000 to win the BCS title.
