San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams NFL Odds & Betting

49ers-rams

Two teams from the weak NFC West get together in St. Louis this Sunday when the 49ers take on the Rams. While this game doesn’t figure to get much media consideration, at least the 49ers can feel good about the progress they have made under interim head coach Mike Singletary. Singletary has infused the same high-intensity style of play into his team that made him one of the all-time great linebackers. Odds makers expect the 5-9 Niners to keep rolling with a win over the 2-12 Rams this week. The 49ers are 5.5-point favorites with the total set at 44.

While it has not been a season that 49ers faithful would be proud of when you think about the rich history of this organization, at least NFL betting backers have been able to make some money off them of late. The 49ers have beaten the NFL odds five of the last six weeks. One of those wins was a 35-16 home rout over the Rams. San Francisco was a 7-point favorite for that contest and covered the number easily. The 49ers have both losing records on the road and in division play, but they are in the positive in both categories in terms of beating the spread. The Niners have AFC East co-leader Miami all it wanted and more on the road last week to cover another spread.

History should not be an obstacle for San Francisco either as the 49ers are 9-7 straight up and 11-3-3 against the spread at St. Louis since 1992. In fact, the 49ers are 22-9 against the spread versus the Rams in all meetings since 1992.

The 49ers could be dealt another blow again this week if running back Frank Gore is not able to play. He missed his first game of the season last week with an ankle injury. Gore’s injury puts added pressure on the 49ers passing game to deliver. It was not good enough to get the job done at Miami last week, but perhaps it will be against a defense that is allowing nearly 30 ppg. The 49ers gashed the Rams for 280 yards through the air in its earlier win this season. If you think San Francisco will have St. Louis’ number again, bet the 49ers at -5 at Bookmaker.

The Rams have been a nightmare play with your NFL picks this season. They are 2-12 straight up and only 4-10 against the spread. St. Louis is 1-6 straight up and 2-5 against the spread in home games and a dismal 0-5 straight up and against the spread in the NFC West this season.

The Rams put up a good effort against Seattle last week but came out on the short end of the stick. The Rams led 17-7 at halftime and were still clinging to a 20-13 lead in the fourth quarter but it was not to be for St. Louis. The Rams have been atrocious in divisional play. Last week’s loss gave the Rams a 4-19 record in division games since the start of the 2005 season. The Rams are only 1-10 at home in division play since 2005. Their only win in that span did come against the 49ers team that they are facing this week so hopefully that is a good omen. The Rams offense showed improvement last week with both QB Marc Bulger and running back Steven Jackson playing well. I expect these two to perform at a high level again this week. That leaves it up to the Rams defense to get some stops and they should have an easier time with Gore either playing at less than 100 percent or not at all. Bet the Rams at +5 at Bookmaker if you think they can pull off the upset.
