ACC Power Rankings: Duke-ing it out

Written by Jimmy Boyd on February 2, 2009

acc-power1. Duke Blue Devils (19-2)
Duke lost its first ACC contest of the season on a last second in bounds play to Wake Forest, but the Blue Devils got right back up to crush Virginia. Wake has had some big wins but Duke has shown more consistency and deserves the top spot because of it.

2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (17-2)

Wake has beaten both North Carolina and Duke, but it has also lost two of its last three to a Georgia Tech team bringing up the rear in the conference and a Virginia Tech team with seven losses on the season. One more bad loss by Wake and its big wins aren’t going to hold as much water.

3. North Carolina Tar Heels (19-2)
Since losing its first two in the ACC, the Heels have won five straight with four of those coming by double digits. UNC has more talent than any other team in the league, and if its puts out the effort defensively, will be right in the running for an ACC title.

4. Clemson Tigers (18-2)
Clemson has rebounded from back-to-back double digit losses to Wake Forest and North Carolina with consecutive wins. A big game against Duke this week should tell us if the Tigers will be able to remain in title discussion.

5. Boston College Golden Eagles (17-6)
After upsetting North Carolina as a 20-plus-point underdog, it was letdown city for the Eagles, dropping their next four. But Boston College has now won four straight and should get a fifth straight with a win over Virginia before heading to Wake on February 8.

6. Florida State Seminoles (16-5)
The Seminoles have won 9 of their last 13, with three of losses being single-digit defeats to Pitt, Duke, and North Carolina. This is a team you can’t take lightly on any night and one that has a great shot to make a run in the ACC tournament.

7. Virginia Tech Hokies (14-7)
The Hokies have won 5 of their last 7 with their losses both being heart breakers to Clemson and Boston College by a combined five points. A big win over Wake Forest last week was enough to keep anyone from taking Virginia Tech lightly, even in a down year.

8. Maryland Terrapins (14-7)

The Terps lack size and that has hurt them against the league’s elite. Gary Williams club has played everyone tough with the exception of Duke and a big win over Miami Saturday keeps the Terps ahead of the Canes in our rankings.

9. Miami Hurricanes (14-7)
Miami has played solid basketball, but it has come out on the wrong side of two overtime games to drop three in a row. It better be ready for Wake Forest Wednesday as the Demon Deacs figure to be out for blood after a disappointing loss.

10. North Carolina State Wolf Pack (11-8)
It’s a down year for NC State, but the Pack has beaten the teams it was supposed to and even upset Miami last week.

11. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (10-10)

An awful season by Tech standards has one big bright spot and that was a two-point win over Wake Forest Saturday. Let’s see if the Yellow Jackets can build on it when they go to FSU this week.

12. Virginia Cavaliers (7-10)
Virginia did beat Georgia Tech in late December, but in college hoops it’s all about what did you do for me lately, and the Cavs have lost five straight.
