Alabama at LSU Football Odds & Picks
The number one ranked Alabama Crimson Tide head to hostile territory to battle fellow SEC foe LSU in Baton Rouge Saturday afternoon. Alabama is trying to maintain their overall number one standing in the BCS with a win over another ranked team, but it won’t be easy on the road. LSU’s lone home loss this year came at the hands of 14th ranked Georgia, a team that Alabama beat in week five of this year. Logic would dictate that since Alabama beat Georgia and Georgia beat LSU that Alabama should beat LSU, but we all know that things aren’t that simple in the world of the college football. However, oddsmakers tend to agree with logic and that’s why they’ve made Alabama a 3.5 point favorites over the a LSU team at home. The total is set a 48 points.
Alabama fields a formidable offense. So far this season they’ve managed 32 points per game and nearly 370 yards per game. By the looks of things, the Tide are set on keeping the ball on the ground as much as possible. Out of their 370 total yards of total offense, 205 of them are rushing yards and over 70% of the team’s touchdowns have come on the ground. Quarterback John Parker Wilson’s job is basically to avoid turning the ball over and to hand the ball off to running backs Glen Coffee and Mark Ingram. LSU’s rush defense will be put to the test this week, that is for sure.
It’s not surprising that the number one team in the nation has one of the best defenses in the nation. The Crimson tide defense gives up just over 12 points per game and just over 250 yards of total offense per game. It’s difficult for any opponent to win a game putting up those kinds of numbers. One of the more impressive stats for this defense is a credit to the skill and power of the defensive line. Bama has give up just one rushing touchdown all season long. Alabama’s impressive defense is no doubt a huge factor in the fact that the Crimson Tide are 3.5 point favorites Saturday.
LSU comes into the week’s game ranked number 15 in the nation. At 6-2 the Fighting Tigers’ losses have come at the hands over two very talented teams in Florida and Georgia. Against stiff defensive competition LSU is still gaining over 400 yards of total offense and scoring about 32 points per game. The Tigers have found success both running and passing, but turnovers in the passing game are a growing concern, particularly in big game situations. The balanced attack should keep the Alabama defense on their toes and LSU’s best chance for picking up yardage most likely comes through the air.
Something LSU has had in the past they don’t have this year is one of the more impressive defensive units in the SEC. They are still a talented group, to be sure, but they are giving up 24 points per game and nearly 300 yards per game, numbers that are higher than what where expected. Even so, the Tiger defense will force Alabama to change up their game plan somewhat as they are also very strong against the run. If you think the Tigers can stop the Alabama rushing attack this weekend, you should probably take a look at taking the home team in this contest. The best line on the game at this time is from BetUs.com, who has at LSU +3.5.
This is a classic SEC battle and nothing will come easy for either team. Alabama has an edge with confidence as they are undefeated and the Tigers have already suffered two losses. You can be certain that LSU would like nothing better than to play spoiler to Bama, however, and they do have one of the best home field advantages in the nation.
