Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers NFL Betting & Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on December 11, 2009

The 8-4 Arizona Cardinals take on the 5-7 San Francisco 49ers in a Week 14 NFC West Division showdown on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Last week, the Cardinals posted an impressive 30-17 win over NFC North leading Minnesota in the Sunday nighter. Week 13 was not as kind to the Niners, which gave up a late scoring drive to Seattle to fall 20-17. These two teams last met back in Week 1 with the 49ers defeating the defending NFC champs 20-16. The Cardinals have won six of the last nine meetings but trail the all-time series 20-16. NFL odds makers believe Arizona will have its revenge, listing the Cardinals as a 3-point favorite with the total set at 44.

The Cards can clinch NFC West with a win Sunday. In order to get it done, they’ll have to avoid a letdown after, perhaps, their biggest win of the season. If Kurt Warner plays well, Arizona’s chances of winning every game are pretty darn good. We saw that when the Cards made their Super Bowl run last season. Warner has been playing at an extremely high level again this season, having already thrown for 3,003 yards and 23 touchdowns. Over his last four starts, he has even taken his game to new heights, posting an unbelievable 120-plus passer rating during this span. He will get a chance to continue his assault when he faces the league’s 27th ranked pass defense Monday night.

On the defensive side of the football, I’m going to be watching strong safety Adrian Wilson. Wilson is having an outstanding year in both pass coverage and run support. He’ll be responsible for making quick reads and filling quickly to help slow down Frank Gore in the running game and Vernon Davis in the passing game. If he plays well, it will go a long way toward an Arizona victory. It is worth noting that the road team is 8-0 ATS in the last 8 meetings. If you like this trend to continue, bet the Cardinals at -3 at Bodog.

The word is out on the 49ers and it’s been out for a while. Make Alex Smith beat you through the air. With the 49ers going to more of a spread attack in recent weeks, Smith has posted some impressive numbers, but those numbers are yet to translate into many wins. Until Smith can start delivering “W’s”, teams are going to continue to challenge him to beat them. The good news is he is building chemistry with rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who has at least three grabs in each of his first seven starts. While Crabtree tied his career-high with six catches last week, he is yet to go over the century mark in a single game. This week would be a good one for the two-time Biletnikoff winner to have a coming out party. It is worth noting that the 49ers are 6-0-2 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog. If you like San Francisco in the underdog role Monday, bet the 49ers at +3 at Bodog.
