Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Brown NFL Predictions & Spreads

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 13, 2009

The 4-4 Baltimore Ravens take on the 1-7 Cleveland Browns in a Week 10 AFC North Division battle on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Last week, the Baltimore offense wasn’t able to do much of anything and the result was a 17-7 loss to Cincinnati. The Browns have been blown out three straight times since picking up their first win of the season. They are hoping that last week’s bye gave them enough time to get ready for the Ravens. These teams have already met back in Week 3 with Baltimore rolling 34-3. The win was Baltimore’s fifth in the last seven meetings and it owns a 14-7 lead in the all-time series. NFL lines makers have listed the Baltimore Ravens as an 11-point favorite with the total set at 40.

Baltimore’s defense is still respectable, but it hasn’t put the fear of God in its opponents the way it did last year and for most of the decade. The Ravens are usually one of the best, if not the best, run stuffing units in the league, but they have sank to No. 7 this season. In fact, Baltimore has been gashed for 142 or more rushing yards in three of its last four games. Cleveland’s offense has struggled, but it has been able to run the football at times this season, gaining 117 or more rushing yards in three of its last five games. In fact, the Browns were able to put up 146 rushing yards against Cincinnati in an overtime loss last month. If Jamal Lewis and company can have a solid day running the football, the Browns could have a chance to pull off the upset.

I think we find out what kind of a coach Eric Mangini really is this week. A 1-7 start never gets you the respect of the fans, but he might be able to win over management if he can get his players ready to play and they put forth an inspired effort Monday night. He’s going to have to show management something because it appears that they are ready to start shaking things up. They just fired general manager George Kokinis during the bye week and Mangini must give them a reason why he should not be next. It is worth noting that the Ravens are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games as a road favorite and the home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings. If you like Cleveland to keep this one within the number, bet the Browns at +11 at BetUS.

Since getting out of the gate 3-0, the Ravens have lost four of their last five. The team has especially struggled away from home, losing three of four road games this season. While I would like to see a more ferocious Ravens defense this week, I believe the key is the offense. The Ravens are 4-1 this season when they score at least 30 points and they would be 5-0 had they not missed a game-winning field goal attempt in Minnesota. Joe Flacco’s pass protection has let him down in recent weeks and Baltimore has already allowed 16 sacks this season. That number could be even higher if Flacco had not done such a good job of throwing the ball away. If Baltimore can protect Flacco, he could have a big day through the air against a Browns defensive unit ranked No. 22 against the pass. It is worth nothing that the Ravens are on an 8-0 ATS run versus teams with a losing record. If you like this unbeaten trend to continue, bet the Ravens at -11 at BetUS.
