While Washington State is not considered a Pac-10 power and the Cougars did have to scramble to get to Waco early to play the game prior to the arrival of Hurricane Ike, Baylor’s 45-17 blowout win over a Pac-10 opponent appeared to be a step in the right direction for Art Briles’ team.

Freshman QB Robert Griffin was terrific. He posted 346 yards of total offense, including a school record 217 on the ground, as the Bears scored their first win over a 1-A program for the new coach and moved to 2-1 on the season.

Things are expected to be much tougher this week as they head out on the road for the first time this season to take on last year’s Big East co-champs before returning home to play No. 3 Oklahoma next week.

Last week’s win should give Baylor some much-need confidence before a date with UConn. Baylor ended a nine-game losing streak against 1-A opponents with Friday night’s 45-17 rout of Washington State. It was Baylor’s most lopsided win over a 1-A school since a 49-21 victory over Iowa State Oct. 26, 1996. The Bears recorded the third 400-yard rushing game for the program and the first since Oct. 9, 1993, against SMU. Baylor has also scored 40-plus points in two straight games for the first time since 1994. And to prove that the defense would not be out done, it came up with five turnovers and seven sacks.

Since deciding to go with the freshman Griffin, the Baylor offense has been coming up big. The question will be if it can continue to get the job done against a formidable opponent. If you think the Bears can cover the spread, bet Baylor at +12.5 at JustBet to get in on the best line.

UConn is not expected to be as good as it was a season ago when it came out of nowhere to share the Big East title, but the Huskies may have looked as good as they have ever looked in the Randy Edsall era when they rolled Virginia 45-10 last week.

Running back Donald Brown racked up a 206 yard performance and QB Tyler Lorenzen seemed to be in more command than he was in the first two games of the year. He was 13 of 15 with one touchdown and no interceptions – playing a very poised game.

Cornerback Darus Butler, who is starting to see more and more offensive snaps, took a reverse in from 13 yards out to get in on the scoring act. He also had a pair of catches for 40 yards.

This performance was very surprising following an unimpressive 12-6 win over Temple. It leads us to wonder if we will see a consistently good product on the field or one that fluctuates each week. The key for UConn this week will be to avoid any letdowns after a truly dominating performance against Virginia. Bet Connecticut to cover the spread at BetUS to receive up to a 50% sign up bonus.
