BCS National Title Game Predictions

Written by Mr. East on October 27, 2008

This week saw the action at the top settle down, as the only casualty was Oklahoma St. in a head-to-head battle of unbeatens vs Texas. We are now down to 8 unbeaten teams, and the Cinderella report includes Ball State, Tulsa, Boise State, and Utah, still amongst the ranks of the unbeaten. I will begin with this week, not only to take a look at the week ahead, but also to try and unravel the National Championship Game.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

ARKANSAS ST. @ ALABAMA (8-0)

If Alabama loses this one there ought to be an investigation

TEXAS (8-0) @ TEXAS TECH (8-0)

Heated, hated rivals with everything on the line. Texas will now be facing the 4th of consecutive weeks vs unbeaten teams. It is hard to imagine there is a lot left in the tank, and Tech sent a big message dominating Kansas on the road last week. I still believe Texas is the better team, but what a tough spot with their 4th in a row vs an unbeaten team. Can they get it up one more time?

TULSA (8-0) @ ARKANSAS

Tulsa scores about a million points a game, but can’t defend anyone. How does that game translate against a mediocre BCS Conference team? Arkansas is on the improve, and with Tulsa unbeaten, this one might get their attention, UPSET ALERT!

BOISE ST. (7-0) @ N. MEXICO ST.

Hardly think the Broncos are in trouble here.

UTAH (8-0) @ NEW MEXICO

Utes should survive, can’t count N. Mexico out but the upset probability is extremely low here.

BYE WEEK:

BALL ST. 8-0

PENN ST. 9-0

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE TITLE GAME:

Ball State and Tulsa can run the table, and neither will earn a BCS berth, which is pretty sad, because those teams can never win one, regardless of what they do.

UTAH has 2 meetings, both at home that will boost their BCS ranking presently 11th if they win. Those games are vs TCU, and BYU. If they win both, they could be a BCS BUSTER

BOISE STATE is currently #12, and with what is left on their schedule, I expect them to run the table and if Utah loses to either BYU or TCU then Boise St. will again be a BCS BUSTER

THE UNBEATEN BCS teams:

PENN ST. with their big win at Ohio St. has very winnable games from here out, and I expect them to be a certain representative in the National Title game.

Texas has a huge game at Texas Tech, as well as a game vs Kansas on the road. It looks like the winner of the BIG-12 North is going to be Missouri, so if they run the table they meet again. Obviously if Texas runs the table they are in and will likely play Penn St.

Texas Tech needs to beat Texas, or they are done. They still have Oklahoma St at home, and Oklahoma on the road, and if they survive to win the South, they will face Missouri. I can see 1-3 losses left for this team, and if it is 2 or more they are out of a BCS Bowl, which is more likely than not

ALABAMA has a huge game vs LSU in 2 weeks. That may determine their Championship fate. The rest are all likely wins, until the SEC Championship, which will put them vs Georgia, or Florida. If they win out, their chances are very good, but with Texas or Texas Tech still unbeaten, and penn St. as well, who knows.

OKLAHOMA still has Texas Tech, and Okla St. left, but will have to get some help to get a chance at Missouri for the Big-12 Championship game, which is their only shot at the National Championship game, and a lot has to happen for them to get their that is out of their control. Still a very viable BCS Bowl contender

FLORIDA still has to play at Georgia, and Vandy, and with wins, and a possible matchup with Alabama for the SEC Championship, keeps the Gators faint hopes alive for a Championship opportunity, but lots has to happen for them to get there.

USC has one tough game left vs California at home, otherwise they will be a 1 loss team, that should be in a BCS Bowl somewhere.

OKLAHOMA ST. is still at Texas Tech, and Oklahoma, certainly tough games, and still has a chance for a BCS Bowl.

GEORGIA still has some tough games left, with Florida at home, at Auburn, and G. tech at home, a win vs Florida, should give them another shot at Bama in the Title game, not dead, but needs help.

THE NATIONAL TITLE GAME PREDICTION:

PENN ST vs TEXAS
