Last week, the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears each went on the road and shocked two of the AFC’s best teams. The Panthers and Bears both will try to ride the momentum from Week 1 to a 2-0 record when they meet Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

Chicago and Carolina both stumbled their way to 7-9 finishes in 2007, with poor quarterback play factoring into their losing seasons. The Panthers lost veteran starter Jake Delhomme to season-ending elbow ligament surgery in September, while the Bears – using a quarterback carousel of Rex Grossman, Brian Griese and Kyle Orton – didn’t look anything like the team which played in the Super Bowl in 2006.

Both teams have come out smelling like roses at the QB position after a week of play. While a healthy Delhomme rallied the Panthers to a 26-24 victory over reigning AFC West champion San Diego last Sunday, Kyle Orton played effectively to help the Bears shock Indy 29-13 in a rematch of the 2006 Super Bowl.

Delhomme couldn’t have scripted a better return to the lineup – driving the Panthers 68 yards in a two-minute drill a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dante Rosario on the game’s final play for the win. Delhomme completed 8 of 11 passes on the winning drive, and finished the day 23-of-41 for 247 yards without any picks. It’s not like Jake had not pulled off these late game heroics before. Last week’s come from behind win marked the 10th time in his career that he has mounted a game winning drive in the final two minutes or overtime.

A 2-0 start for the Panthers gets history on their side. The Panthers have not started a season 2-0 since 2003. That season just happened to be the year that Delhomme led them to the Super Bowl.

Delhomme also got plenty of help from a strong ground game that produced 142 rushing yards in the season opener. Third-year back D’Angelo Williams started and gained 86 yards on 18 carries, while rookie Jonathan Stewart ran 10 times for 53 yards. If you think Carolina has what it takes to cover the spread at home, bet the Panthers at -3 at Bookmaker and receive a 20% cash signup bonus.

The Bears have been plagued by failed running backs in the draft in recent years, but they may have finally landed a good one. Matt Forte, drafted out of Tulane, looked like a potential rookie of the year candidate in week 1. Forte became the first Bears rookie running back to start a season opener since the great Walter Payton. Forte gained 123 yards on 23 carries and had a 50-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

QB Kyle Orton, who started the 2007 season as the third-stringer, didn’t look too bad either. He went 13 of 21 for 150 yards and most importantly did not turn the ball over.

The Bears hold the 2-1 edge in terms of head-to-head meetings, but the home teams has won each game. If you think Chicago can break this trend, bet the Bears at +3 at BetUS and receive up to a 50% signup bonus.
