Best Super Bowl Moments

Throughout the 42-year history of the Super Bowl, there has been some moments that have stood out among all others–plays that are so recognizable that they have become the focal point of the Super Bowl in which they appeared. Because the Super Bowl stage is so large, some players will be remembered by most for only what they did in “the greatest show on earth.” I have listed my top five best Super Bowl moments of all-time. Let’s have a look.
1. You can bet on it!
The New York Jets were 20-point underdogs at game time against the powerful Baltimore Colts, but that didn’t stop Broadway Joe Namath from guaranteeing a Super Bowl victory earlier in the week. You’ll remember, or have seen footage of, Namath jogging off the field with his right index finger held high in the air. Namath set himself up to be a goat or a hero. While the world was making goat noises, he and the Jets had the last laugh. I would have loved to have had the Jets on the money line.
2. The Two-minute Man
There was no one better than Joe Montana at running the two-minute drill. Joe Cool was nearly perfect in four Super Bowls, but his most memorable Super Bowl moment has to be the winning drive in Super Bowl XXIII. He capped off a 2:36, 97-yard miracle drive with a 10-yard strike to John Taylor to leave just 39 seconds on the clock for the Bengals. The Niners won the game 20-16.
3. “The Catch”
This play doesn’t have a name to my knowledge, but I’m going to take the liberty of calling it “The Catch” because it was the best catch in Super Bowl history. The Steelers’ Lynn Swann’s acrobatic catch that he tipped to himself over cornerback Mark Washington in Super Bowl X can’t be topped. Before that, he had made a juggling catch on the sideline that had fans going nuts, but then he outdid himself with the most memorable grab in Super Bowl history. No receiver ever made it look easier.
4. The Fridge’s Rumble
Bears fans wanted to see Walter Payton get this touchdown, but the rest of the world finds Chicago’s display of rubbing it in quite memorable. The Bears were humiliating the New England Patriots, but Ditka decided to keep piling it on by sending 310-pound D-tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown. Anytime players are asked to do something that they don’t normally do, it gets a lot of attention.
5. It’s about time
Another impressive run concludes our top five best Super Bowl moments. John Elway was nearing the end of his career and had already been denied in the Super Bowl three times. He wouldn’t let it happen again. Late in the third quarter of Super Bowl XXXII, Elway took off out of the pocket on a third-and-six, scrambling for the first down chains. He leaped for the mark and was met by two Packers defenders in the air, sending Elway spinning like a top. Elway got up with the first down and pumped his fist in triumph. The Broncos went on to upset the heavily favored Packers and Elway got his first ring. This play has become the one synonymous with this Super Bowl.
