Big 12 Power Rankings: Sooners Sailing

Written by Jimmy Boyd on February 2, 2009

big-12-power1. Oklahoma Sooners (21-1)
The Sooners survived a couple tough road contests at Oklahoma State and at Iowa State to improve to 7-0 in the Big 12. With its next two games at home against Texas A&M and Colorado, the Sooners should be 23-1 when the week ends. If the ACC and Big East continues to beat up on each other, OU might see the No. 1 spot yet.

2. Kansas Jayhawks (17-4)
This was supposed to be a down year for the defending national champs after losing much of its scoring from a year ago, but KU is 6-0 in the Big 12 and taking the league by storm again. The Kansas Jayhawks are a 1.5-point underdog tonight at Baylor.

3. Texas Longhorns (15-5)
Another solid team for the Horns with A.J. Abrams leading the way. If Texas doesn’t go down in OT Saturday at home to Kansas State, it remains at No. 2 on my list. In terms of depth, talent, and toughness, Texas is still likely the second best team in the league.

4. Missouri Tigers (18-4)

Missouri is quietly making some noise in the Big 12 behind leading scorer DeMarre Carroll. No one expected much when they fell to Nebraska in a game where they only scored 51 points, but the Tigers have responded to win 5 of 6 since, including a huge 17-point win over Baylor Saturday.

5. Texas A&M Aggies (17-5)
The Aggies beat Baylor, then lost to OU, Kansas, and Texas before rebounding with wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. It’s win over Oklahoma State avenged a loss in its conference opener. Now the Aggies will try to avenge a 6-point loss to Oklahoma Wednesday.

6. Kansas State Wildcats (14-7)
After opening the Big 12 season with 4 straight losses, 3 by double digits, the Cats are finally clicking. They have won 3 straight, including big wins over Missouri and Texas.

7. Baylor Bears (15-6)
The Bears have the talent and the experience to be higher on this list, but they have not gotten the job done. While OU, Texas, and Missouri are not slouches, the Bears failed to beat any of those three opponents. That has them looking like a second tier team unless they can redeem themselves against Kansas tonight. Baylor is a 1.5-point favorite at home against Kansas.

8. Nebraska Corn Huskers (13-7)
Nebraska has wins over Missouri and Kansas State, which are starting to look pretty impressive right about now. The road has been its Achilles Heel and it is coming off a much needed road win at Texas Tech to end a three-game skid. Let’s see if that gets the Huskers going.

9. Oklahoma State Cowboys (13-7)
The Cowboys are a fun team to watch with their uptempo play and shooting lots of threes. They could easily have won four of their last five instead of losing four of five, but a lack of defense has put them on the short end of the stick.

10. Iowa State Cyclones (12-9)
We almost saw some Hilton Magic Saturday as the Cyclones had the Sooners on the ropes at home but in the end Blake Griffin and Willie Warren were too much. The Cyclones have one of the best post players in the league in Craig Brackins and they will continue to be a tough out at home.

11. Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-10)

Tech beat the Buffs 63-55 in a head-to-head January 20th and that keeps it out of the gutter in our rankings.

12. Colorado Buffaloes (9-11)
The Buffs are the only Big 12 team that does not have a winning record on the season but they have showed some promise recently, losing at Kansas by just 5 Saturday, beating Iowa State, and losing in OT to Kansas State.
