Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots NFL Betting Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

Since opening the season with their best start in 13 years, the Buffalo Bills have ran into some problems against division opponents. They’ll try to put an end to those problems this week against the five-time defending AFC East champion New England Patriots. The Bills are looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses in a critical matchup with division title implications. It will not be easy as the Patriots have dominated the rivalry under coach Bill Belichick. While odds makers see this one as a much closer contest, they have still given the edge to New England. The Patriots are 3.5-point home favorites with the total set at 41.5.

Buffalo won five of its first six games to start the season. It was the first time since 1995 that the team had pulled off such a feat. In case you’re wondering, that was also the last year that Buffalo won a division title. Buffalo has since lost two in a row to AFC East opponents and will have its work cut out for itself to make the postseason if it doesn’t get things turned around now.

Buffalo jumped out to an early lead against Miami before giving up the final 18 points in a 25-16 road loss on October 26th. The Bills then lost 26-17 at home last Sunday to the New York Jets, gaining only 30 yards on the ground. A win over the Pats could go along way to restoring optimism in the Bills and its fan base but it won’t come easy as the Bills have lost 14 of 16 meetings with New England since Belichick took over the club before the 2000 season.

Taking care of the football will go a long way toward helping Buffalo win this week. The Bills have committed seven turnovers in their back-to-back losses. QB Trent Edwards is responsible for three of those turnovers, all interceptions, after only throwing two picks through the first six games.

Buffalo’s problems are easy to figure out as it goes with the old adage that turnovers and penalties kill you. Edwards was 24 of 35 for a career-high 289 yards and a touchdown last Sunday. But the two interceptions he threw proved to be costly. New England QB Matt Cassel has been doing as good of a job as anyone could have expected in filling in for reigning MVP Tom Brady. He could get a little extra help this week from the injury bug as leading Buffalo pass rusher Aaron Schobel will still sidelined with a left foot injury. The two-time Pro Bowler hopes to be back by the end of the month.

The Patriots are in a log jamb with Buffalo and New York atop the AFC East and have a heavy dose of history on their side this week. The Pats have won nine straight in the series, including a season sweep last year in which New England outscored Buffalo 94-17. New England knows it is not going to be that easy, but they also know that they have not lost to Buffalo at home in eight years.

Much of New England’s success against the Bills can be attributed to Tom Brady and the Bills will not have him at their disposal this week. Cassel has been consistently getting better each week. He is eighth in the league with a 67 percent completion rate and has four 200-yard performances in the team’s last five games. He has seven touchdowns against seven interceptions. The Patriots have started to loosen the reigns with their young QB because of the problems they have had in the running game. They will put the ball in his hands again Sunday hoping he can deliver. Bet the Patriots if you like them to continue their dominance over Buffalo.
