Nevada vs Boise State Football Picks & Odds

Written by Steve Janus

Boise State tried to move to 11-0 and in the BCS Bowl hunt this week on the road against the 6-4 Nevada Wolfpack.  The game certainly means a lot to the Broncos, but Nevada has a very good team and would love to hand Boise their first loss of the season.  Nevada is 6-4 on the season, but one of their losses was against Texas Tech and a second loss was against Missouri, so it’s not as if they are rolling over to just anyone.  Nevada’s losses against New Mexico State and Hawaii are a little more concerning, however, as Boise State dispatched of New Mexico State 49-0 and beat Hawaii 27-7.  Those numbers don’t mean a whole lot in Saturday’s game other than the fact that Nevada has been a little inconsistent, so we’ll let some of the other numbers speak for themselves.  Boise State is now a 7 point favorite over Nevada with the total set at 61 points.

As has been the case for several years now, the Boise State Broncos put up some pretty impressive numbers on the offensive side of the ball.  They score over 37 points per game and gain over 400 yards of total offense per contest.  Granted, Boise is the class of the WAC and they have a severe drop-off in competition after the top 2 or 3 teams, but other teams in the same conference can’t seem to match what the Broncos do, so those numbers remain impressive, even if they are a little inflated.

The Boise State defense has been downright sick against conference opponents.  On the year the Broncos are allowing just 10 points per game and have allowed seven points or less in 6 of their 10 games this season.  Again, those numbers are a little bit deceiving, but they just go to show how much better Boise is than the rest of their conference.

While Boise State’s offensive numbers are impressive, the numbers that Nevada is putting up this season nearly put them to shame.  The Wolfpack are scoring 38 points per game on 524 yards of total offense including the nation’s best running attack, which averages 325 yards per contest.  Boise State has been good against the run this year, but they’ll be pushed to their limit against the pistol-style offense of Nevada.  The Wolfpack are a 7 point home underdog this week.

Where Nevada comes up short against the Broncos is the play of their defense.  The Wolfpack are giving up over 30 points per game on 382 yards of total offense.  Nevada has been great against the running game, allowing just 64 yards per game, but it’s come at a price as the passing offense hasn’t been nearly as stingy.  With a powerful Boise State team coming to town, the Nevada defense will need to play its best game of the year to steal a game from their conference foe.

All signs point to this game turning into a shootout, but there maybe more defense than you might expect as both squads have been able to stop opponents at times.  Offensively these teams put up similar numbers, it’s the style of play that’s so much different.  On defense, there’s really no comparison as Boise clearly has had the better year on that side of the ball.
