Boston College v. Notre Dame Football Betting Odds

It’s time for the annual Holy War as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish head to Boston College to take on the Eagles on Saturday, November 8th, 2008. Both teams are coming off tough losses a week ago and will try to get back on track. The early college football odds on this game show the books think the Eagles will be the ones who do so as Boston College is a 3-point favorite over Notre Dame with the total set at 45.
Last week Notre Dame was in a four-overtime battle against Pittsburgh, but they came away the losers by a score of 36-33. The Irish are now 5-3 on the year after dropping two out of their last three games. Things aren’t looking great for fans this week either as the team is just 1-2 on the road. Boston College has been struggling as well though, losing 27-21 to Clemson last week to drop the Eagles to 5-3 overall and 3-2 at home. BC has to be happy to see the Irish though, a team they have beaten in five straight contests.
Notre Dame’s offense has improved their numbers from a year ago, gaining 121.8 rushing ypg and 263.7 passing ypg to help them score 27.4 ppg. Jimmy Clausen is emerging as a star in his second season with 2,103 yards and 18 touchdowns to go with nine interceptions. His two top targets are Michael Floyd and Golden Tate. They have combined for 78 caches, 1,309 yards and 12 scores. Armando Allen is the leading rusher for the Irish with 433 yards.
Notre Dame’s defense hasn’t been all that great this year, but they are holding opponents to 20.9 ppg, 127.8 rushing ypg, and 206.8 passing ypg. The team has been opportunistic as well with 17 turnovers forced, including 10 interceptions. Boston College has gained 149.9 rushing ypg and 184.8 passing ypg to enable the team to score 28 ppg. The problem the Eagles have been having is that they are turning the ball over way too many times, 20 in all. Quarterback Chris Crane can beat you with both his arm and his feet, but has struggled with consistency. He has just eight touchdown passes to 12 intereptions, but he does lead the team with seven rushing touchdowns. Brandon Robinson is the best receiver on this Boston College team with 27 receptions and 444 yards. There are two capable running backs for the Eagles as Montel Harris and Josh Haden have combined for 684 yards and five scores.
Boston College’s defense looked good to start the year but is struggling to stop the opposition recently. In the first four games of the year the Eagles held opponents to just 6.5 ppg, but they have given up 31.5 ppg over their last four games. The total ypg is still at 274.8 while the Eagles have intercepted 14 balls and recovered eight fumbles. This should be a pretty tough matchup between two good, but not great teams.
