BCS Bowl Predictions – Week 14

Written by Steve Janus

The most likely scenario for the BCS National Championship Game is an Oklahoma/Florida match up.  If the Sooners win against Oklahoma State this week, they should get enough juice to jump Texas in the BCS rankings, get into the Big 12 title game, beat Missouri, and end up in the big game.  The road for Florida is similar.  The Gators have Florida State this week, then they’ll play Alabama in the SEC Championship game.  The winner of that game will be in the BCS Championship and we’re projecting that to be Florida.  Things could get messy if either team loses this week.  While unlikely, crazier things have happened.  The first step for Oklahoma is to beat Oklahoma State.  The Sooners are 7 point favorites over the Cowboys this week.

For the Fiesta Bowl, we project Texas against USC.  If Oklahoma is in the BCS Championship, the Fiesta will no doubt take Texas because of their high BCS ranking.  The Longhorns will get paired with USC if Oregon State wins this week against Oregon, therefore winning the Pac-10 and earning a spot in the Rose Bowl.  USC can only make the Rose Bowl to face Penn State (already accepted the Rose Bowl bid) with an Oregon victory this week, but either way, the Trojans are all but guaranteed a spot in a BCS Bowl at this point in the season.

The Rose Bowl could be set after this week.  If Oregon State can beat Oregon they’ll face off with the Penn State Nittany Lions.  PSU already locked up their spot in the Rose Bowl by winning the Big 10 last week with a win over Michigan State.  This game could end up as Penn State vs USC as well, but we’re predicting the Oregon State Beavers to beat their state rival this week.  Oregon State is just a 3 point favorite over Oregon and the total for the game has been set at 62 points.

In the next BCS Bowl game, the Sugar Bowl takes Alabama and Utah.  Even with a loss to Florida in the SEC Championship, Alabama will have plenty of BCS juice to keep them near the top of the rankings.  There’s little doubt the bowl would take the highest-ranked SEC team available, which should be Alabama, but would be Florida if Bama can find a way to beat the Gators.  Utah is undefeated and currently ranked #6 in the BCS.  The Sugar Bowl will have to pick between the Utes and the Big East Champion, which should be Cincinnati.  Because Cincy is ranked all the way at #19 in the BCS, we feel like the Sugar Bowl would end up taking the undefeated Utah team.

Finally, in the Orange Bowl, we’re projecting Cincinnati versus Georgia Tech.  First off, the winner of the ACC is automatically in.  The most likely ACC Championship pairing will be Georgia Tech against Boston College, with the winner heading to the Orange Bowl.  We’ve obviously chosen the Yellow Jackets to emerge victorious in the conference championship.  Barring a loss to Syracuse this week, the Cincinnati Bearcats will win the Big East and, mostly likely, earn a spot in the Orange Bowl.  Nothing is promised to the Big East champ, however, and the bowl could end up taking an undefeated Boise State team that ranks much higher on in the BCS poll.
