Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers Line

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 24, 2011

The San Diego Chargers (4-6) will be trying to snap a six game losing streak when they host the Denver Broncos (5-5) Sunday.

Odds makers expect the Chargers, who are currently listed as a six-point favorite with the total set at 42, to end their misery.

The Bolts check into this week’s division showdown off a 31-20 loss to the Chicago Bears in The Windy City.

Philip Rivers completed 21 of 31 throws for 280 yards and two touchdowns but was picked off twice – the seventh time he’s thrown at least two interceptions in a game this season.

Seven of his completions, including one of his touchdown tosses, went to Vincent Jackson, who led the team with 165 receiving yards.

Ryan Mathews led the way on the ground with 37 of the team’s 52 rushing yards.

Tim Tebow engineered a late scoring drive to lift the Broncos to a 17-13 home victory over the New York Jets last week. Despite pedestrian numbers, Tebow is 4-1 as a starter this season.

He completed 9 of 20 passes for 104 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions against the Jets. He also ran the ball eight times for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Demaryius Thomas led the team with 37 receiving yards on two grabs.

With Tebow under center, teams know the Broncos are going to run the football. Even though they know it’s coming, they haven’t been able to stop it.

The Broncos rank fourth in the NFL with 154.9 rushing yards per game and have averaged 209.2 rushing yards a contest with Tebow at the controls.

The Broncs could be poised for another big day on the ground versus a San Diego defense that has given up an average of 135.2 rushing yards during its losing streak.

While Denver has run the ball out of necessity, San Diego could benefit from choosing to run the football more. The Chargers are 3-0 this season when they have at least 28 rushing attempts.

The Broncos have allowed an average of 120.1 rushing yards over their last seven games. They have given up an average of 180 yards on the ground during their four-game losing streak to San Diego.

The Chargers ran for 206 yards in a 29-24 win in Denver on Oct. 9.

These two last met in San Diego on Nov. 22, 2010 with the Chargers winning 35-14.

While it may be tough to pull the trigger on a San Diego squad that has lost five in a row against the number, it is likely just as hard to lay down on a Denver bunch that is on a 1-8-2 against the spread slide in this series.

High scoring games have been a fixture in this matchup in recent years. We have seen these two combine to finish over the total in eight of the last 11 meetings as a result.
