NFL Football Picks: Broncos at Falcons

Written by Steve Janus

The Atlanta Falcons have been one of the best stories in the NFL this year.  Lead by the impressive play of rookie quarterback Matt Ryan, the Falcons have played their way into a 6-3 record.  Denver has a rising star at quarterback as well in Jay Cutler, who has lead a very productive Denver offense to a 5-4 mark.  The Falcons have been the big story, though, coming from a 4-12 performance last year, Atlanta re-tooled and has been reaping the benefits sooner than many predicted they would.  Atlanta is a 6 point favorite over Denver with the total set at 51 points.

The Broncos field one of the best offensive units in the NFL averaging just under 25 points per game and racking up 395 yards of total offense per game, the vast majority coming through the air.  Cutler has had his ups and downs this season, the ups are the 18 touchdown passes and the 2,616 passing yards, the downs are the 11 interceptions, which is a little high.  The Broncos could benefit from finding their normally-solid ground game.  This year they are averaging a mediocre 107 rushing yards per game.

While the offense is one of the best in the league, the Broncos’ defense is one of the worst.  So far this year they have given up nearly 30 points per game on 390 yards of total offense.  There aren’t many bright spots for Denver on this side of the ball.  They’ve been disappoint against the run and they are ranked 28th overall against the pass.  It’s a good thing Denver’s offense is capable of keeping up with most offenses, because they aren’t stopping anyone this year.  You can bet the Broncos +6.5 at BetUs.com.

The big story on Atlanta’s offense has been Matt Ryan, who is having a year most rookies dream of.  He’s passed for over 1,900 yards and thrown 11 TDs against just 5 interceptions.  Ryan has already established a favorite wide out in Rodday White, who’s having a great year with 803 yards and 6 touchdowns already this year.  The Falcons use a two-back approach in their running game, splitting time between Jerious Norwood and Michael Turner.  Both have contributed well to a running game that averages around 160 yards per game.  All in all, the Falcons run a balanced and efficient offense.

Defensively the Falcons aren’t great, but they are good enough to give Atlanta a chance in just about every game.  They are allowing 19 points per game with opposing teams averaging 118 rushing yards and 228 passing yards per game against them.  The Falcons’ secondary will have plenty to look out for this week, but they can focus on stopping the pass as Denver doesn’t have a running game to speak of.  Bet on the Falcons -6 at BookMaker.com.

It’s no surprise that the Falcons are favored in Sunday’s game against the Broncos.  They are playing at home and their offense has shown they have the ability to run and gun with Denver.  The big advantage here is the Atlanta defense, which has played significantly better than Denver’s unit.
