Denver Broncos at New York Jets Football Odds & Picks

A pair of AFC division leaders meet Sunday when the Broncos take on the Jets in the Big Apple. The Jets come in riding high after beating the NFL’s last unbeaten team (Tennessee) to win their fifth straight game while the Broncos will be looking to bounce back following an embarrassing long to one of the worst teams in the NFL (Oakland). Odds makers have listed the Jets as 7.5-point favorites with the total set at 47.5.

New York now sits at 8-3, which is a position few anticipated they would be in after the way the season began. The Jets lost two of their first three games but have gone on to win seven of their last eight. The Jets have been magnificent during their current five-game winning streak, outscoring the opposition by an average of 16.2 points. History could be on the side of the Broncos this week, however, as the Jets have not won six in a row since 1998. The Jets beat rival New England 34-31 in overtime on November 13 to take over sole possession of first place and last week’s win over Tennessee helped them pull within two games of the Titans for home-field in the postseason. Future Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre has been a big reason for the success. Favre was 25 of 32 for 224 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win and running backs Thomas Jones and Leon Washington provided the balance, rushing for 96 and 82 yards respectively. It was a truly dominant performance by the Jets, which racked up over 400 yards of offense and scored 34 points on one of the best defenses in the NFL. Considering the Jets had little trouble moving the ball against the Titans, one would think they’d be able to do it against a Broncos team which ranks 38th in the NFL in both total defense and scoring defense. The only difference is that this Broncos team has showed the offensive explosion it takes to play in a shootout. We just didn’t see it last week. While Denver has some impressive wins this season, it also have a couple of ugly losses to lowly division rivals Kansas City and Oakland. Oakland handed Denver a 31-10 home loss last week. Despite its struggles, Denver has a two-game lead in the AFC West over a San Diego team which just can’t get it together. If Denver is able to go on and win the West, it will be the first time in franchise history that it has led the division from beginning to end. Many of Denver’s problems can be solved if they can do a better job of holding onto the football. QB Jay Cutler has had a pretty good season but he threw an interception and lost a fumble last week and these are the kinds of things that has haunted this team. Denver is among the worst teams in the NFL in this category with 22 turnovers on the season (22nd in the NFL) and it is even worse in terms of turnover differential (31st in the NFL at minus-12). Another area that has hurt the Broncos is its injury-plagued tailback position. It is down to its first tailback this season, but it may have finally found one that can get the job done. Rookie Peyton Hillis has rushed for 118 yards and three scores in Denver’s last two games. These two teams haven’t met since the 2005 season when the Broncos routed New York 27-0. Denver went 13-3 in the regular season that year and advanced to the AFC title game. If you like Denver to bounce back from its worst performance of the season, bet the Broncos at Bookmaker.
