Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins NFL Picks & Predictions
The Buffalo Bills head to LandShark Stadium in Miami looking to get back to .500 for the season against the winless Dolphins in a Week 4 AFC East Division battle. Last week, the Bills saw Terrell Owens’ consecutive games with a catch streak come to an end in a 27-7 loss to the Saints and the Dolphins lost QB Chad Pennington for the season with a shoulder injury in a 23-13 loss to the Chargers. The Bills and Dolphins last met in Week 14 of last season with Miami earning a 16-3 win behind a dominant defensive performance, but the Bills have won four of the last six meetings. Miami leads the all-time series 52-37-1. NFL lines makers are expecting a close one this week, listing the Buffalo Bills as a slight 2-point favorite with the total set at 36.5.

The Dolphins drafted former Michigan QB Chad Henne to be their QB of the future. The future likely came sooner than the Dolphins expected, but nevertheless, the second year signal caller will make his first start in the NFL this Sunday. The Dolphins hope that he can learn quickly from the mistakes he made against the Chargers when he spelled Pennington last Sunday. Henne threw an interception that was returned for a score.
Losing Pennington for the season could lead Miami to rely even more heavily on the Wildcat offense. Miami had great success with the old single-wing formation last season and has already done damage with it in 2009. It was very effective against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2 with running back Ronnie Brown taking the snap. The next step is to get rookie QB Pat White in there more as the trigger man. While Brown has shown his passing ability in the formation a few times, White is a much bigger passing threat and could help make the Wildcat an even tougher offense to tackle.
Miami has been a run heavy team under the current regime and the running game has been solid this season. Don’t be surprised if running back Ricky Williams has a big game. He seems to love running against the Bills. His 784 career rushing yards against them are more than he has against any other team. It is worth noting that the Bills are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven versus the AFC East. If you think Miami can overcome the loss of Pennington this week, bet the Dolphins at +2 at Bookmaker.
Terrell Owens was not happy after going without a catch in last week’s game and I can’t blame him. He and fellow wideout Lee Evans are two of the best in the game at their position and they aren’t seeing enough of the football. I would have to think that Buffalo would be tailoring its game plan to get T.O. involved this week. He can be a major offensive weapon and not throwing too him is only going to get him that much closer to another implosion. Evans could be poised for a big game as he has 693 receiving yards in his career against the Dolphins, which is the most he has against any opponent. Unlike in year’s past, the Bills have weapons and it’s time to loosen up the playbook and use those weapons.
Defensively, I’m keeping my eyes on Buffalo defensive end Aaron Schobel. I have always like Schobel. He’s a high motor guy and he’s played well this season. He’s especially played well against the Dolphins in his career with nine sacks against them. He’ll be looking to tee off on Henne this week. It is worth noting that the Bills are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games following a double-digit loss at home. If you like this trend to hold true, bet the Bills at -2 at Bookmaker.
