Buffalo Bills at New York Jets NFL Lines & Picks
The struggling 1-4 Buffalo Bills take on the 3-2 New York Jets this Sunday in a Week 6 AFC East Division showdown. Week 5 wasn’t kind to either of these division rivals. The Bills managed only three points and fell 6-3 to the Browns and the Jets fell 31-27 to division rival Miami in a thriller on Monday Night Football. These teams last met in Week 15 of last season with the Jets winning 31-27 on Shaun Ellis’ fumble return for a touchdowns with under two minutes remaining. The Bills have won three of the last five head-to-head meetings and hold a 53-44 lead in the all-time series. NFL lines makers expect New York to take care of business this week, listing the Jets as 9.5-point favorites with the total set at 37.5.

The biggest thing I want to address pertaining to the Bills this week is the play calling of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Just before the regular season got underway, the Bills decided to give Turk Schonert the axe and they handed over play calling duties to Van Pelt. I’ll admit, I was somewhat impressed by Van Pelt in Buffalo’s first two games, but it must have been beginners luck because the offense is really struggling right now. The Bills are only averaging 6.6 points per game in their last three games and two of those contests were at home. Van Pelt hopefully logged some overtime hours to come up with a solid game plan this week or the Bills could be in trouble again. It is worth noting that the road team is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings in this series and the Bills are 4-1 against the spread in their last five meetings in New York. If you like Buffalo to keep this one within the number, bet the Bills at +9.5 at BetUS.
After a fast start, the Jets are now facing some adversity after back-to-back losses and the question to be answered this week is how they’ll respond. Mark Sanchez and the Jets’ offense showed that they could bounce back strong after a poor performance in New Orleans. Sanchez has thrown a touchdown pass in four of the Jets five games and he now gets some additional help with Braylon Edwards joining the squad. Edwards caught five passes for 64 yards and a score in his Jets debut and appears to be a good fit.
But enough with the offense. We have heard so much about Rex Ryan’s defense, but that defense gave up 413 yards of offense against the Dolphins. There is also a developing trend that New York is having trouble stopping the run. After holding each of their first two opponents well under the century mark, the Jets have given up an average of 143.7 rushing yards per game the last three weeks. The running game is Buffalo’s strength right now. If New York is not able to shut it down, the Jets could be in for another close game with a division rival. It is worth noting that the Jets are an outstanding 10-2-1 against the number in their last 13 games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game. If you like this trend to hold true, bet the Jets at -9.5 at BetUS.
