BYU at Utah Football Odds & Picks

Written by Steve Janus

Two of the best mid-major teams in the nation meet as the #8 ranked team in the nation, undefeated (11-0) Utah hosts the #16 team in the nation, the 10-1 BYU Cougars.  This game is for all of the marbles in the Mountain West as either team could still technically win the conference title, but this game is all about the BCS for Utah, who will likely earn a spot in one of the 5 BCS Bowls if they can win against BYU and end the regular season 12-0.  Utah is a 7 point favorite over BYU and the total is set at 54 points.

BYU has been able to tear through the defenses of the majority of their opponents.  So far this season the Cougars are averaging 36.4 points per game on nearly 450 yards of total offense.  Their main mode of production is through the air behind the arm of quarterback Max Hall, who accounts for 319 of the 450 yards per game that BYU gains.

Defensively BYU has some solid numbers, but they are a little bit deceiving.  They’ve given up over 30 points three times this season, but they’ve managed to hold some opponents to low enough scores to average out to allow just 18 points per game.  They’ve given up just under 350 yards per game, with a pretty even split between the run (151 yards per game) and the pass (198 yards per game).  The Cougars will get a handful this week, so expect the final number they allow this week to be closer to 30 points than the 18 they are allowing on average.  The Cougars are 7 point underdogs on the road this week.

The Utes haven’t had any trouble moving the ball either this season.  So far Utah is putting up a healthy 36.5 points per game on just over 400 yards of total offense.  They are splitting the load nicely between the run, averaging 172 rushing yards per game, and the pass, averaging 230 yards per game.  What makes this unit so dangerous is their versatility.  They can beat you any way you’ll let them.

On the defensive side of the ball Utah has been as tough as they come in the Mountain West Conference.  On the season they give up just 16 points per game on average and are allowing only 285 yards per game, which includes just 94 rushing yards per game.  BYU will be one of the better offensive units the Utes have faced, but if their past results are any indication of their future results, they should be just fine.

Both teams have a lot to gain with a win tonight, but Utah has the most to lose as a loss Saturday would cost them not just the conference title, but a chance to play in a BCS Bowl game.  These teams are eerily similar, but the Utes do have the advantage that comes from playing at home.
