Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints NFL Betting Odds & Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd

The 3-4 Carolina Panthers will be looking to hand the 7-0 Saints their first loss of the season when the two division rivals meet in New Orleans Sunday. Last week, the Panthers earned a little revenge by defeating the Arizona Cardinals, who knocked them out of last year’s playoffs, 34-21. Meanwhile, the Saints stayed unbeaten with a 35-27 win over the Falcons on Monday Night Football. These team’s last met in Week 17 of last season with the Panthers edging past the Saints 33-31 behind a big 178-yard rushing day from DeAngelo Williams. This series has been all Carolina in recent years with the Panthers winning six of the last seven meetings. The books don’t expect this one to be so close, listing the Saints as a 13-point favorite with the total set at 52.

Panthers QB Jake Delhomme started his career in New Orleans and he has been sticking it to his former team ever since he left. In fact, Delhomme is 8-2 against the Saints in his career. For him to improve on that mark, he won’t have to have a big game, but star running back DeAngelo Williams will. In fact, the Panthers are a perfect 10-0 when he rushes for at least 110 yards. Williams had a big day against the Saints the last time these two teams faced off and he could be poised to do so again. It’s no secret that New Orleans’ defense is improved, but we all saw the way Atlanta was able to run the football on the Saints last week. Plus, big defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis is expected to miss Sunday’s game with an injury. That means that there could be some nice holes for Williams and Jonathan Stewart. The key for Carolina will be to not get behind early as so many other teams have against the Saints. When you fall behind you have to pass the football to play catch up and that falls right into the hands of the Saints.

Julius Peppers has been a big reason for Carolina’s turnaround. Since Week 5, he has six sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception return for score. He’ll try to disrupt Drew Brees and the Saints offense this week. It is worth noting that the Panthers are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 meetings in New Orleans and the road team is 15-2 ATS in their last 17 meetings. If you think odds makers are spotting a Carolina team that won outright as a double digit dog last week too many points, bet the Panthers at +13 at Bookmaker.

The Saints are averaging an NFL-best 39 points per game. While Miami and Atlanta have tested New Orleans the last two weeks, ultimately, the Saints have been just a little too explosive for its opponents. New Orleans has, perhaps, the best set of playmakers in the NFL, and unquestionably the hottest QB in the league dishing it out to those playmakers. Another thing that has gone in New Orleans’ favor thus far is that it has stayed relatively injury free. Game-breaker Reggie Bush has caught the injury bug every year since entering the league, but he is healthy in 2009 and has scored a touchdown in three straight games. But, perhaps, the best news is that tight end Jeremy Shockey is healthy and playing at a high level. He takes the pressure off of Marques Colston and is as reliable a third down target as there is in the league. If the Saints can stay healthy, right now, they appear to be the clear favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. It is worth noting that the Saints are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games as a favorite and a perfect 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss. If you like New Orleans to bury the Panthers, bet the Saints at -13 at Bookmaker.
