Georgia coach Mark Richt should be much more comfortable now that his team has slid to No. 2 in the latest AP poll. The drop came as pollsters felt that Georgia’s 45-21 win over Georgia Southern was not as impressive as what USC did to Virginia. Now the Bulldogs have escaped some of the heat, but they still need to play like they want to be back on top of the polls.
Georgia began the season as the top team in the country for the first time in school history and they continue their pursuit of their first national title since 1980 when Central Michigan comes to town.
Heisman Trophy hopeful Knowshon Moreno finished with 59 rushing yards on eight carries and added two catches for 53 yards last week. It was a light days work for Moreno, who racked up 1,334 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. The talented runner did get into the end zone three times to match his career high.
Freshman tailback Caleb King proved that he is also a back to be reckoned with. He rushed for 95 yards on just 12 carries. The Dawgs were able to amass 543 yards of total offense in week 1 – its most since September of 2005.
QB Matt Stafford was solid as always. He threw for a career high 275 yards and two touchdowns to take away from some of Moreno’s Heisman thunder.
Georgia’s win did come at a price however, as defensive tackle Jeff Owens tore the ACL in his right knee and will have to undergo season ending surgery. Owens joins teammate Trinton Sturdivant, and offensive tackle who suffered a season ending knee injury in preseason workouts. As the injuries pile up, it only gets tougher to get where you want to go – the BCS title game.
Georgia’s defense faced a spread in its season opener and will face a similar offense Saturday. The only different is that this one belongs to the two-time defending MAC champs. As we’ve seen in recent history, quality mid-majors are not to be takent lightly. We only have to look back a couple season to remeber what Boise State did to Oklahoma in a BCS bowl.
The Chippewas led by QB Dan LeFevour, who threw 27 touchdown strikes and ran for 19 more last season. LeFevour was 21 of 31 for 217 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s win over Eastern Illinois. LeFevour is a very similar QB to Florida’s Tim Tebow and that gives Georgia head coach Mark Richt the willies. If it wasn’t for Tim Tebow’s miraculous 2007 season, we might all be talking more about LeFevour. The reason why Richt is a little unsettled about facing LeFevour is because Tebow torched the Dawgs last season. LeFevour is trying to lead the Chippewas to back-to-back victories to open a season for the first time since winning their first three in 2002. If you think the Chipps can keep this one with striking distance, take the points at BetUS Sportsbook.
