San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs Odds

Written by Jimmy Boyd on October 26, 2011

The Kansas City Chiefs (3-3) will be looking to win a fourth straight game when they host the San Diego Chargers (4-2) Monday at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs are currently listed as a 3.5-point underdog with the total set at 44.

Since starting the season 0-3, the Chiefs have rattled off three straight wins. None were more impressive that last week’s 28-0 road victory over division rival Oakland.

The Kansas City defense intercepted six passes in the rout. Brandon Flowers picked off two of those passes and ran one back 58 yards for a touchdown.

Offensively, the Chiefs need better from quarterback Matt Cassel, who completed 15 of 30 passes for 161 yards and was intercepted twice. Fortunately, they were able to do some damage on the ground.

Led by Jackie Battle, the Chiefs racked up 139 yards on the ground.

Dwayne Bowe led the team with six catches for 76 yards.

The Chargers blew an opportunity to improve to 5-1 by blowing an 11-point lead in last week’s 27-21 defeat at the New York Jets.

Quarterback Philip Rivers connected on 16 of 32 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Five of his completions, including the touchdown toss, went to tight end Antonio Gates, who led the team with 54 receiving yards.

Running back Mike Tolbert led the way on the ground with 58 yards and a score. He’s currently listed as questionable for Monday with a hamstring injury.

San Diego will have to do a better job of stopping the run in order to get back in the win column this week.

The Chargers rank third in the NFL against the pass with 175.7 yards allowed per game, but they rank 21st against the run with 121.7 yards allowed per contest.

The Chiefs, who led the NFL is rushing offense in 2010, rank seventh this season with 129.3 rushing yards per game.

The Chargers could look to keep the pigskin on the ground also. After all, the Chiefs rank 25th in the league with 125.5 rushing yards allowed per game.

San Diego’s running attack, however, could be slowed with Tolbert and Ryan Mathews banged up. Matthews is currently listed as probable with a thumb injury.

Keep in mind that the team with the most rushing yards has won each of the past three meetings.

The Chargers have won seven of the last eight matchups in this division series with the most recent being a 20-17 victory at home just over a month ago.

While San Diego has had the upper hand, it is worth noting that it is just 4-9-1 against the spread in its last 14 meetings in Kansas City. It is 2-7-1 against the spread in its last 10 road games in the favorite role.

In regard to the total, the under has been the play recently. These two have finished under the number in three of the last five meetings with one push. It’s also worth noting that the Chiefs have played to the under in six of their last eight at home.
