San Diego Chargers v. New Orleans Saints NFL Betting Odds

Written by Brad Marchetti

A couple of the NFL’s top QB technicians will go to work on their opponents secondary’s this Sunday when the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees face the San Diego Chargers and Phillip Rivers. The two offensive monsters will meet at full throttle in the San Diego Chargers vs New Orleans Saints match-up in London England. New Orleans (3-4) will have to overcome the loss of playmaking RB\WR\KR Reggie Bush, but they can make due with Deuce McAllister in the running game. The Chargers are at a crisis point with a 3-4 record and no sense of self. San Diego is coming off a 14-23 loss at Buffalo. The NFL betting odds for the San Diego Chargers vs New Orleans Saints match-up is San Diego -3.

This overseas game is vital for both teams. The New Orleans Saints were taken out of their stride last week in a 7-30 loss against Carolina as +3 dogs. QB Drew Brees had this to say about the defeat: “Our three previous losses were all games that we had opportunities to win at the end,” Brees said. “This was the first one that we were beaten decisively. … That was more disappointing than anything.” The Chargers meanwhile were beaten 14-23 in Buffalo as +1 dogs. Banged up franchise running back LaDainian Tomlinson had this to say about the game in London on Sunday: “They were kind of going through the same struggles,” Tomlinson said of the Giants. “They came here and it kind of changed their season. We’re hoping for the same kind of luck. Hopefully, London brings us that.” Both of these teams have suffered from sloppy play and the team that plays cleaner should win.

Drew Brees (108.5 passer rating) is playing as good as anyone QB in the NFL right now. For the time being however, Brees will have to do his work without his top weapon Reggie Bush. Bush will be replaced at RB by Deuce McAllister (4.2 YPC 1 TD) a very capable power back that can move the chains. As a wideout and returner, Bush’s remarkable playmaking ability will be missed. Returning this week to the Saints high-octane offense will be Brees’s big wideout WR Marques Colston. The Saints have great depth at wideout to compliment stars Colston (400+ Bench-Press) and TE Jeremy Shockey (21 Rec. 0 TD). The Chargers have decent pass-rush ability but the secondary has gotten smoked at times. The Chargers have also been touched on the ground for 127.3 yards per game in their last 3.

Phillip Rivers (108.5 passer rating) has played lights out for most of the season. Rivers has a strong arm, quick feet and an unwavering confidence. The Chargers 6th ranked offense has been held back due to injuries to All-Pro’s LaDainian Tomlinson and TE Antonio Gates. Both of these guys have been playing at about 80%. Besides the injuries, San Diego’s offense has often been out of rhythm despite their gaudy stats. This week Rivers will have his #1 WR Chris Chambers (4.40 40-speed 40+” vertical leap) back to abuse defenses with. While Chambers was on the sideline, 6′5″ #2 WR Vincent Jackson displayed outstanding hands, physical strength and red-zone production. The Saints 19th ranked defense has proven to be better than last season’s unit. Saints MLB Jonathan Vilma (4.50 40-speed) has proven to be an excellent pickup with a team leading 63 tackles.
