Chiefs at Raiders NFL Picks & Predictions

Written by Steve Janus on November 28, 2008

Two of the worst teams in the NFL meet this Sunday as the Chiefs travel to Oakland to play the Raiders.  Oakland and Kansas City have combined for just 4 wins this season and 18 losses.  The majority of the games haven’t been even been close, but luckily for one of them, someone gets to walk away with another mark in the win column.  The Chiefs have lost a franchise-worst 19 of their last 20 games.  The Raiders really haven’t been much better, but they are coming off of a very surprising upset at Denver last week.  The Raiders have been terrible at home, however, earning just a 1-4 mark straight up and against the spread this season.  The Raiders are 3 point favorites over the Chiefs and the total has been set at 41.5 points.

Kansas City’s offense has shown some signs of life through the course of the season, but on the whole they have not had a very productive year.  They are scoring just 17.8 points per game and totaling just 308 yards of total offense.  They are gaining over 110 yards per game on the ground, but their passing offense has been virtually non-existent, airing it out for less than 200 yards per contest.  The Chiefs should at least have a chance to score some points this week against a Raiders’ defense that hasn’t play all that much better than this offensive unit.

The numbers that teams have been putting up against Kansas City this year are starting to get a little embarrassing.  They are giving up nearly 30 points per game and over 400 yards of total offense.  There isn’t a silver lining in here to speak of.  The pass defense has been terrible, allowing opponents 7.7 yards per attempt, while the running defense give ups 166 yards per game on 5 yards per carry.  Oakland will be able to open up their playbook and run just about anything successfully this week.  The Chiefs are 3 point underdogs on the road.

The offense for Oakland just hasn’t been there.  The Raiders simply aren’t finding the end zone this season.  They’ve scored just 14.5 points per game (including only 10.8 ppg at home) and they are just barely gaining 260 yards of total offense per game.  They are rushing the ball for 122 yards per game on average, but they are throwing the ball for only 140 yards per game on 51.4 percent completions.  Those numbers won’t get it done against anyone, except for maybe the Chiefs.

On defense the Raiders have given up huge yardage to their opponents.  So far teams are averaging over 350 yards of total offense against them, resulting in 22.3 points per game against.  Somehow the passing defense has been tolerable, giving up less than 200 yards per game, but that could be because teams are having a heyday on the ground against the Raiders, gaining 160 rushing yards per game against them.  Linesmakers have made the Raiders 3 point favorites this weekend.

There aren’t a lot of bright spots on the field for either team, but the Raiders can come into the game with some confidence having won their 3rd game of the season last week in a game they were supposed to get destroyed in.  The Chiefs can’t say the same and they would be lucky to walk away with their second win this year.
