2008 LA Clippers Predictions & Season Preview

The Los Angeles Clippers are hoping it’s not back to the same old team they had been seeing take the floor after the team fell to 23-59 a year ago. Gone are a couple of their big names in Elton Brand, Corey Maggette and Shaun Livingston, but the team did nab a couple of quality replacements in Baron Davis and Marcus Camby. The Clippers are hoping that the changes that they have made will have them back in the playoffs, but with our NBA predictions we are seeing that as an unlikely end to the year. LA is at 16-to-1 to win the Pacific Division.
Davis will help the team instantly on offense. He’s one of the top five point guards in the league and can take over at any point. Camby does the same kind of damage on the defensive end and with rebounding.
Down low the team got more than they could have expected last season out of rookie Al Thornton, who put up 12.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. This year he should see more time which should increase those numbers. Chris Kaman will move over to power forward with Camby playing the center spot. He had 15.7 points and 12.7 rebounds last season. When you pair Kaman up with Camby the Clippers have a solid rebounding and defending pair in the paint. Camby is one of the best defenders in the league who led the NBA in blocks a year ago. The LA Clippers are listed at 40-to-1 to win the Western Conference.
In the backcourt Davis will join up with veteran Cuttino Mobley. Mobley is a solid shooter who has lost a step. Davis needs to stay healthy, because when he is there aren’t too many guards better than him in the league at making things happen. He can score in any fashion from his outside shot, penetrating the lane, or posting smaller guys up. LA is listed at 50-to-1 to win the NBA Finals.
Coming off the bench will be Tim Thomas and Ricky Davis. Davis has had problems being a team player, but is explosive at times when on the floor. Rookie guard Eric Gordon is going to be able to learn from a couple solid veterans as he develops his game for the pros. DeAndre Jordan is another rookie that head coach Mike Dunleavy is excited about. The over/under win totals for the Clippers this year has been set at 34.5.
Final Analysis
Fans were disappointed when they went from thinking they were going to have Davis and Brand carrying the load to hearing that Brand was bolting for Philly. Still, this team should be better than they were a year ago with Davis running the offense and Camby shutting teams down with his defense. They lack a post player who can score though, which in the West will mean they will be on the outside looking in come playoff time.
