College Basketball Power Rankings

Written by Jimmy Boyd

ncaab-power1. Duke Blue Devils (17-1)
Duke has won nine straight games which included an 18-point victory over a highly rated Xavier team and a 9-point win over Georgetown. The Blue Devils are deep, experienced, and also have the best coach in the country calling the shots. Gerald Henderson has taken his game to another level here recently and Kyle Singler reminds me of Larry Bird the way he can do it all.

2. Connecticut Huskies (17-1)
UConn is a close second to Duke on my list with five impressive wins over the top 25. The Huskies have won six straight since falling to Georgetown and will have some nice momentum in their favor before heading to Notre Dame Saturday. A. J. Price continues to lead this very athletic unit.

3. Pittsburgh Panthers (17-1)
Pitt drops on the list because of last Saturday’s loss at Louisville, but it is still clearly one of the top challengers for college basketball’s biggest prize. The Panthers quickly responded with a blowout win over No. 8 Syracuse on ESPN Big Monday.

4. North Carolina Tar Heels (15-2)
Since losing to Wake Forest, the Heels have responded with three straight wins, all by double digits. Their 24-point blowout win over Clemson Wednesday on ESPN appeared to be a statement that UNC is still the team to beat in the ACC.

5. Oklahoma Sooners (18-1)
Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin continued to make his case for player of the year honors last night with a 27-point, 18-rebound performance in a win over Nebraska. Oklahoma clearly looks to be the best team in the Big 12 but it will get Baylor and Oklahoma State’s best shots in its next two games.

6. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (16-1)
Wake Forest went down for the first time this season. It was bound to happen some time, but it was not supposed to happen to Virginia Tech. Like North Carolina did after losing as a big favorite to Boston College, the Demon Deacons will need to bounce back strong to prove that they are for real.

7. Louisville Cardinals (17-3)
The Cardinals must have been doing a little big of sandbagging because the competitiveness of the Big East has definitely brought out the best in this team. The Cards are undefeated in Big East play and have now won six straight games. Recent wins over Villanova, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh has really boosted its resume. Louisville will flat out where you out with its pressure defense. There are currently two Big East teams ahead of Louisville on this list, but there won’t be at the end of the season at this rate.

8. Michigan State Spartans (15-3)
The Spartans just endured a terrible home loss to Northwestern and I expect that to serve as a wake up call for this team. The Spartans have still won 11 of their last 12, including big wins against Texas and Kansas. Tom Izzo is one of the best motivators in college hoops and he will get his boys back on track.

9. Syracuse Orange (17-3)
Syracuse’s talent is unquestionable, but this team is going to have to show that it can come up big in big games. Syracuse has dropped two of three, losing to Georgetown and Pitt, and it has Louisville on weekend. Cuse needs that one bad to show it belongs on this list.

10. UCLA Bruins (14-3)
The Bruins have won 10 of 11 with that only loss coming in OT to No. 17 Arizona State last Saturday. The great backcourt of Darren Collison and Josh Shipp make the Bruins one tough cookie. Plus, this program has been one of the most successful in the country the past three seasons.
