College Basketball Power Rankings: Huskies No. 1
1. Connecticut Huskies (21-1)
The best teams in the country have the ability to win away from home so it comes as no surprise that UConn is 7-0 on the road and 4-0 in neutral floor games. Crushing Louisville, which had already knocked off a No. 1 ranked Pitt team at home, was an exclamation point on UConn’s ranking.
2. Duke Blue Devils (19-2)
Duke quickly lost the respect it had gained with the No. 1 ranking in the country when it lost to Wake Forest last week. UNC also lost to Wake and Boston College and yet it is ranked above Duke in the AP Poll. Duke plays tremendous defense and can light it up from the perimeter with the best teams in the land. This looks to be Coach K’s next Final Four team.
3. Oklahoma Sooners (21-1)
Some of you might be surprised that I don’t have OU up a spot since it is ranked No. 2 in both polls, but the Big 12 is a little down this year and Oklahoma had all it could handle with Oklahoma State and Iowa State on the road in its last two games. Not completely sold on the Sooners yet so I hope they keep me ready to buy.
4. North Carolina Tar Heels (20-2)
I won’t be surprised at all if UNC gets back in the No. 1 spot before the season is over. The Heels are just that talented. One thing they can’t afford to do is get caught sleeping which nearly happened at FSU last week. With those early ACC losses, the Heels should be more motivated than ever to win a title this year.
5. Marquette Golden Eagles (20-2)
Best guards in the nation this year but the Golden Eagles may not have enough of an interior game to go the distance. We’ll find out a lot about this team when it finishes out the conference season with UConn, Louisville, Pitt, and Syracuse.
6. Louisville Cardinals (17-4)
I know the Cards were beaten at home by UConn, but I’m still big on them as their pressure defense is guaranteed to take every team out of its comfort zone. They had the Huskies playing the pace they wanted but were not converting on the offensive end.
7. Pitt Panthers (20-2)
You hear an awful lot of talk about DeJaun Blair, but this team would not be nearly as good without floor leader Levance Fields. He averages an impressive 7.1 assists per game and was great in Pitt’s last Big East contest against Notre Dame.
8. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (17-2)
Wake has some big wins (UNC, Clemson, Duke) and some bad losses (Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech). This team’s only Achilles Heel seems to be its outside shooting and not getting up for weaker opponents.
9. Clemson Tigers (18-2)
Clemson has rebounded with 2 big wins after losses to Wake and North Carolina and we get to find out if the Tigers can hang with the big dogs tonight when they take on Duke.
10. Xavier Musketeers (19-2)
A scare by UMass last weekend, but Xavier has the makeup of an Elite 8 squad and it is understandable that this team would lose focus at times playing in a much weaker conference where it is not challenged night in and night out.
