College Basketball Power Rankings: Kansas Keeps Top Spot

Written by -

1. Kansas Jayhawks (22-1) – The Jayhawks are the No. 1 team in the country in every poll behind a perfect 8-0 start in Big 12 play, but they’ll have to take care of business against Texas in Austin tonight to stay No. 1. NCAA basketball odds makers have listed Kansas as a 2-point favorite with the total set at 153 tonight against Texas.

2. Syracuse Orange (23-1) – With Villanova’s loss to Georgetown, the Orange now clearly appear to be the team to beat in the Big East. Syracuse easily handled both Providence and Cincinnati this past week. It has UConn up next.

3. Kentucky Wildcats (22-1) – Since losing to South Carolina, the Wildcats have won three in a row by double digits. Perhaps that loss was the wake up call this young team needed. While inexperienced in several spots, the Cats, led by point guard John Wall, have the talent to beat any team in the country.

4. Villanova Wildcats (20-2) – The Villanova Wildcats drop a spot in our rankings this week after enduring their first Big East loss to Georgetown Saturday. But they have a chance to redeem themselves tonight if they can get past West Virginia. However, the NCAA basketball betting lines suggest that may not happen. Villanova is listed as a 5.5-point underdog tonight.

5. West Virginia Mountaineers (19-3) – While the USA Today/ESPN Poll has WVU already ahead of Villanova, I do not. But that will change if the Mountaineers can get the win tonight at home. WVU has two losses in Big East play to Syracuse and Notre Dame by a total of just three points. In other words, this is a very good basketball team.

6. Purdue Boilermakers (19-3) – With Michigan State’s back-to-back defeats, and with Purdue’s five straight wins, the Boilermakers now appear to be the team to beat in the Big Ten. But I guess we’ll find out for certain Tuesday night when the two schools meet in East Lansing.

7. Georgetown Hoyas (17-5) – Talk about quality wins. The Hoyas have impressive double digit wins over both Duke and Villanova since January 30th. But what’s the deal with a home loss to South Florida last week? The Hoyas were caught looking ahead, but championship teams don’t let that kind of thing happen very often.

8. Duke Blue Devils (19-4) – Duke leads the ACC and is an impressive No. 3 in the RPI.  Its first meeting with rival UNC is coming up this week. The matchup loses some luster because the Tar Heels are down, but Duke better come ready to play because you can bet they will be hungry for a season-saving win.

9. Michigan State Spartans (19-5) – The Spartans fall to No. 9 in our rankings from the No. 5 spot with their first two Big Ten losses coming this past week. I can’t wait for their Tuesday night showdown with Purdue.

10. Kansas State Wildcats (19-4) – The Wildcats are an overtime loss against Kansas away from shaking things up a little bit in the Big 12. The Cats get another crack at their in-state rivals in early March.
