College Basketball Power Rankings: Kentucky is Back
1. Kentucky Wildcats (19-0) – Coach John Calipari has wasted no time restoring the Kentucky Wildcat basketball program as it now sits at No. 1 in the nation with an undefeated record. Led by point guard John Wall, projected by most to be this year’s No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, the Wildcats might just be able to run the table. If they’re going to do so, they’ll have to get past Tennessee twice next month as well as Florida again.
2. Villanova Wildcats (18-1) - The Wildcats are picking up right where they left off after making a Final Four run last season. They are off to a perfect 7-0 start in the tough Big East.
3. Kansas Jayhawks (18-1) - Since a slip up on the road at Tennessee, the Jayhawks have rattled off four straight wins with three of them coming by double digits. NCAA basketball odds makers have Kansas listed as a 12-point favorite tonight against Missouri.
4. Syracuse Orange (19-1) – The No. 1 team in the country in the RPI rankings certainly is a legit top five team in the country, and I think the Orange deserve to jump higher if they can get past Georgetown tonight. Syracuse is listed as a 6-point favorite.
5. Michigan State Spartans (17-3) – Last year’s national runner-up is off to a perfect 7-0 start in Big Ten play after a thrilling road win over Minnesota. The Spartans have a tough one against rival Michigan up next.
6. Georgetown Hoyas (15-3) – The Hoyas picked up a nice win over a hot Pittsburgh team last week and can continue to climb if they can knock off Syracuse tonight. Greg Monroe is one of the elite players in the country and could be on his way to Big East Player of the Year honors.
7. Duke Blue Devils (16-3) – It’s odd to see Duke with two ACC losses already, but the Blue Devils are still tied for the conference lead, and they are clearly one of the top teams in the country with an RPI ranking of No. 3 (behind only Syracuse and Kansas).
8. West Virginia Mountaineers (15-3) – The Mountaineers recently played Syracuse to a 1-point game and are coming off a good win over a surging Ohio State team. They are also ranked No. 5 in the RPI. They’ll be in action next against DePaul Tuesday.
9. Kansas State Wildcats (16-3) - Kansas State picked up a great win over then-No. 1 ranked Texas as it held both Damion James and Dexter Pittman in check, but then it lost as a 9.5-point favorite to Oklahoma State to prevent itself from climbing further up the rankings.
10. Texas Longhorns (17-2) – I’ll give the Longhorns the loss at Kansas State, but then you have to expect the No. 1 ranked team in the country to bounce back against a UConn team that had been struggling. That didn’t happen. Now the Horns will try to regroup at home against Texas Tech Wednesday.
