2008 College Football Bowl Games

Written by Steve Janus

With wins in their respective conference championship games, the Florida Gators and the Oklahoma Sooners both earn the rights to play in the BCS National Championship game.  Florida prevailed in a tough outing against the Alabama Crimson Tide, while Oklahoma ran over Missouri in a 62-21 blowout.  These two teams are no strangers to playing for the title.  Oklahoma is in their 4th National Championship game in the last 10 years and the Gators are playing in their second BCS title game in the last three seasons, winning the title just two years ago over Ohio State.  The opening odds for the game has Florida as a 3 point favorite over Oklahoma and the total set for 71.5 points.

The Fiesta Bowl got the first pick out of the Big 12 for their open spot and with Oklahoma playing in the BCS Championship, the selection committee decided on the Texas Longhorns.  Texas will be pitted against Ohio State, who earned an at-large bid by finishing out their season with three consecutive wins after a tough home loss to Penn State.  The game will be played on January 5th with Texas favored by 10 points over Ohio State and the total points for the game set at 53.5.

There weren’t any big surprises as far as the Rose Bowl was concerned this weekend.  Penn State was already locked in with their Big 10 championship and, with a win over UCLA last Saturday, USC won the Pac-10 conference title and their spot in the Rose Bowl.  USC is a 10 point favorite over Penn State and the total is at 45 points.

Alabama lost to Florida in the SEC Championship, but still earns the right to play in the Sugar Bowl as the next-highest rated SEC team according to the BCS standings.  They’ll play the undefeated Utah Utes, who were selected as an at-large team over the Big East Champion Cincinnati Bearcats.  Alabama is currently a 10 point favorite over Utah with the total in the game set for 44.5 points.

In the final BCS Bowl, the Orange Bowl, Virginia Tech will face Cincinnati.  As ACC Champions, the Hokies were locked into the Orange Bowl and with the Big East Champion sitting without a BCS Bowl bid, the selection committee couldn’t pass on Cincinnati.  The Bearcats enter the Orange Bowl as 2 point favorites over Virginia Tech and the total for the game is 41 points.
