College Bowl Handicapping

Written by Jimmy Boyd

College bowl handicapping is a different beast from regular season games. Everyone seems to hate how the NCAA handles their football post-season, but from a football betting point of view it’s a great time of the year. I mean you have a month of games going on almost every single night, and just as the holiday blues are rolling around and you are starting off a new year, a great slate of BCS games is on the way to help take your mind away from your resolutions.

The main point of this article is going to be getting you in tune with a few of the factors that we take a look at when doing bowl game handicapping. These are factors include schedule, preparation, emotion, and motivations which are completely different from conference play to the bowl season. There are simply some teams that will come out without any motivation since they feel like they missed out on a bigger bowl game by losing a bunch of games down the home stretch. Sure, you’ll see emotions come out in the big conference games that are played, but in bowl games it’s an even bigger issue.

The schedule is also a bit different with coaches and players used to having a game every Saturday between the months of September and November, but now there are weeks between the last regular season game and the time the team hits the field for their post-season competition. A lot of sportsbooks feel like this is an advantage for them. The odds makers have more time to study the games and post a strong opening line, then make adjustments as needed when the early, smart money comes in. However, we feel that when we do our college bowl betting, that extra time helps us just as much if not more than them. Our college bowl predictions can only get stronger with the more time we have to come up with solid information to back our selections, and our clients benefit from it. It helps even more that many of the bowls have contractual obligations with certain conferences, so you know what the potential match-ups could be as early as the middle of November. This gives you time to handicap the possible matchups before the line is ever posted and come up with some solid early college bowl picks.

One thing you can do to make the long wait work in your advantage is to play favorites early and underdogs late. Everyone knows that the general public is fascinated with favorites, so with all that money coming in it has a tendency to drive the line down. If you hold off on the underdog you have been eyeing then it’s possible that you will catch an extra point or two by waiting until closer to game time. Each point matters, especially if the line is around one of the key numbers for football. Along those same lines, look for chances to middle. This means that you can take Team A -2 then a few weeks later have the chance to take Team B at +4. If the game ends with Team A winning by 3 then you get to win both of your wagers and really make a boat load of cash!
