College Football Odds: Florida State at Oklahoma

Written by Rock Henderson on September 8, 2010

A dynamic non conference match-up will take place in Norman, OK on Saturday when the 17th ranked Florida State Seminoles hook up with the 10th ranked Oklahoma Sooners.  Jimbo Fisher had a successful debut as head coach of the Seminoles recording a 59-6 win over Samford.  Oklahoma dropped in the rankings after barely escaping with a 31-24 victory over Utah State.  The Sooners will need a better performance against a team on the rise in Florida State.  OU is a 7.5 point favorite.

Things looked a bit different on the sideline for Florida State with no site of Bobby Bowden for the first time in over 30 years.  Seminole fans saw an scoring explosion in the home opener with 35 points scored in the second quarter alone.  QB Christian Ponder is one of the best in the ACC and got off to a sweltering start with four touchdown passes in the first half of play.  He threw only two incompletions in 14 attempts with one being an interception.  RB Jermaine Thomas was a 3rd team All ACC selection a year ago and rushed for 31 yards with one score.  Most of the starters played in the first half and watched the back-ups in the second.  The Noles’ have a talented group of wide receivers even with the dismissal of Jarmon Fortson.  Taiwan Easterling led the way in the opener with four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.  Bert Reed added a first quarter touchdown reception.  There are some things FSU can work on for their highly anticipated game at Oklahoma.  They turned the ball over twice on offense and allowed 300 yards of total offense to Samford.  Oklahoma is capable of putting that up in a half if Florida State is not prepared.

If not for DeMarco Murray Oklahoma could have seen their national title hopes dashed in the first game of the season.  Murray ran all over the Aggies of Utah State, gaining 208 yards and scoring twice.  Long believed to not play up to his ability, Murray quieted the critics for at least one week.  QB Landry Jones was shaky in his first game as the clear cut starter for the Sooners.  He threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns, but completed less than 50% of his passes and was intercepted twice.  If they don’t get better play out of the quarterback position on Saturday OU is in for a long 60 minutes.  WR Ryan Broyles showed why he is one of the top receivers in the country with a nine catch effort for 142 yards and two scores.  Murray and Broyles dominated on the offensive end for Oklahoma.  Oklahoma returned just five starters on defense and it showed at times last week.  The secondary was blitzed for 341 yards passing and over 400 yards were gained by Utah State.  They did manage to collect three interceptions, but it was a cause for concern for defensive coordinator Brent Venables.  Florida State will go to the air early and often with an experienced quarterback that knows how to handle a hostile road atmosphere.

Oklahoma showcased their weakness early in the season and teams will try to take advantage of it.  They start two new players at corner who have not faced the speed of this FSU team.  Vegas is not ready to give up on this Sooner team yet as they gave them over a touchdown in this game.  I, on the other hand, am ready to jump off the Sooner Wagon and will take the points.
